As the compy ran toward him, Cirrus's amber eyes flashed; as it jumped, he lunged upward, his tiny, needle-sharp teeth closing on the extreme tip of its tail for just a second before it cleared him. He spun to chase it, but it had already gone. He licked his teeth, tasting its blood and giving a low, purr-like growl.
Riptide gave a rattling snarl, rallying those left with him and taking a step forward to display the sickle-shaped claw on his middle toe. The mutant leader knew he was probably going to be killed as his packmates had been, but he'd do his best to leave the herbivore with a couple of scars it wouldn't soon forget. With a commanding bark, he commanded the last of his pack forward - they split into two streams and leaped for the herbivore's flanks, clawing with all their strength. A couple of them managed to climb onto its back, to avoid being crushed against the cave walls. Riptide hung back, out of the Triceratops's reach, waiting.
Xanthe and the other three members of the pack were already getting tired; the bigger predator was several times their weight, and they were barely making noticable progress. They'd gotten the brute to move a little ways away, but it was still too close to the nest for his liking; the smell of blood would alreadt attract other predators, hoping for an easy meal, but when the body started to rot...there could be even more trouble. The alpha male gave another, frustrated snarl and, as his teeth slipped from behind the head for the third time, he decided to give up. "We'll have to leave it here," he muttered. "We might not be able to move it farther now, but if we can convince the rest of the pack to eat it...." He knew he didn't sound optimistic that they would. "Maybe then we'll be able to take it farther from the nest."
