Ruuva fixed a blank red gaze on her daughter and Zar, who muttered an apology and backed away, lowering his head to the two leaders and casting a last look at Aviva, half-longing, half-hopeful. She held his black gaze for a long moment, then turned to her parents. Even though she herself was 130 years old, her hatchling years long past, somehow facing Nex and Ruuva again made her feel very small and young. She took a deep breath, looking into her father's sky blue eyes. "Mother. Father. I've missed you."
"You've come back." Nex's voice was devoid of emotion. Aviva resisted the urge to flinch. She growled, "Father, hear what I say. I never meant to hurt either of you. I just wanted....a little more freedom."
"We had no idea where you were. We didn't know if you were alive or dead," Ruuva growled. "There's a reason the outside isn't for our species. We are safe here. The humans and elves who once hunted us cannot find us. We can live in peace."
"But there's a whole world out there we haven't seen in generations," Aviva said, and it was true. Extraxl had very long lives; that did not mean, however, that they were immortal. Only when the child of the Matris and Sator was ready to lead would they step down in front of the whole clan. Only then could their son or daughter take leadership.
Aviva herself was nearly the right age, and had found a mate. When they were ready, they would approach Ruuva and Nex, and ask for their blessing. Both of them were nearly three hundred years old, and Aviva's grandparents nearly five hundred. the longest an Extraxl could expect to live was about six hundred years. In another thirty years or so - if Ruuva and Nex did not meet an early end - she would be ready.
Ruuva shook her head impatiently, but before she could speak, Aviva growled quietly, "I didn't come back to fight. I came to tell you where I've been these years."
The news that she'd befriended an elf hadn't gone over as well as Aviva would've hoped, but Ruuva and Nex had listened at least. And now Aviva had been forced into a promise to return in thirty years, to take her place as leader, in exchange for returning to Arsenic's side.
But she wouldn't be returning alone. The female dragon turned her head to look at her still-sleeping beloved. he had badgered her to let him come with her, and at last, she had relented. Now was the time to rise and begin their journey back to the village. She turned away from the cave entrance and nudged Zar's head with her own until his black eyes opened. "It's time," she murmured, and he pushed himself to his feet, yawning widely.
The two dragons left the cave one after another, flying fast, black closely followed by red as Aviva led the way.
Arsenic exchanged a bewildered glance with Vix, uncertainly playing with his bowstring.
