Within the treeline, a dark figure paced, watching the Rex from a distance. Her lips were curled into a fearsome snarl. She had been watching the juveniles for a while, fulfilling her role as the guardian of the pack's young vigilantly. Her son was, last she had seen, in the nest, sleeping after tiring himself out the previous night stalking through the undergrowth. Or at least, that's what she thought...

"Hey Cirrus, Alira! What're you two up to?" growled Blade's voice eagerly as he left the treeline approaching the two other juveniles. He had been asleep for quite a while, but was quick to track down his playmates once he awoke...

"Dragging her out of trouble by her tail, if I have to," Cirrus growled. Ignoring him, Alira repeated, "I was getting to know the territory better. Then Cirrus showed up and managed to be the first Allosaur to be defeated by a tree." Her brother curled his lip at her.

Xanthe's footsteps were drawing closer, picking up speed as the male picked up the scents of Aurora and the juveniles mixed with the rex's. Trouble was brewing...

It was certainly turning into a major gathering here. Had these been adults, Bladetooth would have been more than a little bit frustrated. But adolescents were a different story. All he had to do was charge, scatter the trio, and pick one of them off once they were separated. A little harder to accomplish than with dim-witted herbivores, but an excellent strategy nonetheless. The tyrannosaur was tired of sitting and waiting anyway.

With a dramatic bellow and the sound of splintering trees and foliage, Bladetooth burst from hiding into the clearing, head low and jaws open in the characteristic posture of attack. Anything that was caught in his jaws would not survive more than a couple of seconds, and he only needed to close a few meters.

The rex's advance sparked Aurora's attack, the female lunging from her own cover and charging right for the Rex's side, the full bulk of the female striking the rex's flank as she lunged, talons and fangs scoring down the predator's side as he was knocked off course, a furious snarl coming from the protective female, her brow ridges a deep, threatening red...

Bladetooth was caught by surprise, not having expected a protective adult to wait until the last minute to strike. He moved with the blow, sidestepping several times before turning to face the angry female that had attacked him. Only one adult so far. An even bigger prospective meal. The rex roared again, trying to get the Allosaurus to back down first. He circled slowly, waiting for an opening to strike, prepared for another lunge by the female.

Cirrus and Alira bolted, keeping close together until they'd put more than a few big trees between themselves and the charging rex. They turned back to watch as Xanthe's roar answered the rex's, the former alpha appearing from between the trees at a near run to put himself between the bigger predator and the adolescents. Because the rex was totally focused on Aurora, it left itself open to the furious father sinking his teeth into its calf, Xanthe's angle and the other predator's own circling giving him the chance to strike and back off before it could return the favor.

The bone chilling snarl of the female showed no hesitation. She did not attack, however, instead hopping to one side until she was between the Rex and the youngsters, Blade having joined his friends within the trees, watching as the two Allosaurs stared down the Tyrannosaur. One on one, the Rex had the advantage of strength to wield against the Allosaurus's speed. But two on one, it had neither. With the two Allosaurs positioned at different positions around the Rex, it could not focus on one without leaving itself open to the other. Aurora's bloodied claws and fangs simply had to wait until the predator chose to attack again or flee in the face of the unfavourable odds...

And then there were two, and Bladetooth was no longer quite as confident in his ability to land a kill, not without serious injury to himself. The Tyrannosaur was no fool; he had no desire to risk his hide for a single meal that he could get elsewhere. Some poetic justice could wait. The Rex swiftly backed off, a rumbling, bone-rattling growl emerging from his jaws as he did so, warning the Allosaurs to back off and stay there. He backed into the trees again, one good eye never leaving the two adults until he was in the shadows, where he could turn safely and stomp off.

Xanthe snarled in response, giving a warning snap of his jaws as he followed the rex's retreat at a safe distance, determined to make sure the brute actually left. He would have to warn Devaki to keep his wits about him on the next sweep of the territory.

Aurora continued to follow after the Rex for a while, keeping a safe distance from it until it was well on its way, not wanting to leave Xanthe in a position to be ambushed. It wasn't unusual for rexes to form small packs themselves, and in recent days, she had learned to expect just about anything...

Bladetooth was used to being chased out of a predator's territory after a bad hunt. It was standard procedure for the smarter ones. The stupid ones lost their hatchlings for not being a little paranoid. But the Rex wasn't about to come back any time soon. He could find easier prey out in the open fields--grazing areas for the various herbivores of the island. Better than risking any more scratches from an angry Allosaur. His wounds would heal, but the stinging was still annoying.

Once he was sure that the rex wasn't going to come back, Xanthe snorted and turned to return and see to the adolescents. He paused, glancing at Aurora to make sure she wasn't injured, and growled, "That could have been a disaster. Well done, Aurora."

"Of course. I did say I would watch over the juveniles. Thanks for the help, though. I don't know how well I'd have been able to fend that Rex off alone" growled the female with a smile as she made her way back towards the adolescents...She's have to have a word with them about risk prevention...

"Hopefully, this will have taught those three a valuable lesson and you'll never have to find out," Xanthe rumbled.

"They're coming back," Alira announced, pulling her head back behind the tree she'd been peeking around. As if to punctuate the statement, the ground was faintly shaking, the impacts growing stronger with each footfall.

"How very observant of you," Cirrus muttered, taking his first shot at his sister since the ordeal had begun. She sighed and rolled her eyes. Well, it was nice while it lasted. Until he'd spoken, he'd been quietly huddled beside her, straining his ears for any sign that the two adults might be losing.

Clovus trudged through the now semi aquatic world more annoyed than he had seemingly ever been before. He enjoyed water, but the amount around him was ridiculously irritating. Growling the large Ceratosaur finally found a semi dry spot to rest his full stomach. He chose a tree surrounded by damp sand, small ferns dotted sporadically around the small bit of land hinting that it once had more vegetation before the storm washed it away. Leaning against the tree, Clovus lowered his large frame down to the ground, growling with contentment. Taking one more survey of the surrounding forest, the large Ceratosaur closes his eyes safe in the knowledge that their were no threats close by...

As Sczarn ran off into the forest, away from the group of adult Camarasaurs that were headed his way, he lifted his large skull into the air. He would have to find some more food, since his meal had been cut short with the arrival of the other Camarasaurs. Nothing in the area, that he could detect on a small whiff, was the group of Camarasaurus heading towards him. He walked off into the forest, not particularly worried about the Camarasaur herd nearing him, since he moved much faster than they would ever move. Taking another whiff, he smelled something, this time a bit more accessible, though a ways off. And quite a bit smaller, which meant less meat, but an easier kill. As he headed off in the general direction of the kill, he would need to have to get a drink from a nearby stream, as he hadn't had a drink in quite a while. He hoped to be in peace for his next meal, this time uninterrupted...

The Liliensternus hatchling let out a squeak as her tiny flank made contact with the ground. She was rolling around in a particularly dirty spot in the cave, amusing herself with the severed tail of her raptor guardian's compy. Flipping onto her back, she grabbed the tip of the tail in her jaws and raked her jet black foreclaws down its length, clumsily kicking at the other end of the tail, missing completely as it flopped to the side out of her reach. The display looked silly, but was nevertheless an important first step in the nestling's eventual development into a predator...

Xypher watched the Lili scramble around, chasing the severed tail of the Compy he had just devoured. It amused him, the Lili rolling around on its back. An awkward movement for a predator, or predator in training. You never want to expose your belly to an enemy. He would eventually have to teach this to the Lili eventually, but she was still young. He had plenty of time to do so...

Crunch.
Sczarns jaws closed on the small Hadrosaurs neck, putting an end to its loud honking. He would need to move the catch a ways off, so no predators in the immediate area would come looking for a easy meal. Not that many would stand up to a fully grown Tarbosaur, but still. There were some opportunistic scavengers that would try to get a piece, but it wouldn't be hard to scare smaller predators off. He took a few bites of the Hadrosaurs side, then began to drag it inland, away from the large river that he had caught it by...

As much as the hatchling seemed to be enjoying her play-fight session, it was impossible to tell what was going through her young mind. She wouldn't be able to speak for a while yet, and who knew how much, or how little she understood of body language, or tone of voice. Her playful scuffle with the compy tail was only the first that had happened since she joined her big-clawed guardian. The rest of the time, the hatchling remained silent, amber gaze almost always keeping track of the one and only being now capable of providing safety. And when the hatchling wasn't watching the raptor, she was stuck to him like a gecko, usually comfortably curled up somewhere near his elbow. It seemed that was her preferred sleeping arrangement.

But did she miss her family? Did she even remember enough of them to feel their loss? Did she realize that they, the Liliensternus were her kind, not the Velociraptor she was with now? The tiny Lili rolled onto her side, kicking out in pursuit of the severed end of the tail, giving a muffled chirp through the tail tip, still clutched in her mouth, as her sharp new hind claws finally met their mark, opening a series of tiny gashes in the base of the tail, cutting the last few inches of it into tatters after several lively kicks. At that, she opened her mouth for a final happy chirp, letting go of the piece of compy and rolling into a crouch. Chirp! chirp chirp! the hatchling insisted, looking excitedly at Xypher as if proud of her accomplishment.

Sczarn had just about finished with the Hadrosaur, when he heard splashing, coming from where he had brought the Hadrosaur carcass from. Hastily, he left the carcass and ventured back to the river, to find out what the splashing was coming from. He stopped. He heard a muffled sound from the river. A loud roar followed. Probably Spinosaur. Sczarn began speeding up, hearing what sounded like a young Tyrannosaur or even a young Tarbosaur's roar, though somewhat muffled through the trees and water...
