Mistpool trotted past Spottednose, giving him a friendly nod, and back into the den, a plump vole in her jaws. She dropped it by Eli and purred, "Enjoy."

The young cat nodded his thanks, but hesitated at the sight of his gift. For some reason, the vole seemed almost alien to him. But if this was what the clan cats ate, what else could he be expecting? Tentatively, Eli took a bite, and almost immediately his hunger took over, demolishing his meal in a matter of seconds.

"Be careful what you say next time, Spottednose. Wouldn't want our guest to feel insulted. You may as well have called him a kit and a weakling just then" warned Shadowsoul once they were far enough out of reach of the den that they couldn't be heard...

Spottednose had plucked a nice plump mouse from the fresh-kill pile, turning towards Shadowsoul in mild surprise. He let the food drop for the moment, so he could respond. "Right..." he growled, ears flattening in disappointment at his own mistake. "I... guess I should've paid a bit more attention. I'm sure he didn't take it personally, though. I hope so, anyway." The tom wasn't a fan of making bad first impressions.

"With an appetite like that, you'll be feeling better in no time," Mistpool commented. The medicine cat began clearing away the leaf scraps to keep her paws busy. Eli had been lucky that it was a time of relative peace in the forest; otherwise he'd probably have been driven off. And even if he hadn't been, she might not have had the supplies she needed to treat him.

"He may well have been too exhausted to focus on it much" growled the tom calmly, before glancing towards the Leader's den, deciding he'd see if he couldn't gather some more information on their latest guest. "If you'll excuse me, I have an ear to lend and an answer to find. Talk to you another time" purred Shadowsoul, his tail twitching with characteristic curiosity as he strode off in the direction of the Leader's Den...

Shadowstar was just leaving her den to go and peek in at Swanfeather again, the young tabby visibly proud and excited to be an aunt. She paused as she saw Shadowsoul's approach, flicking one ear curiously. He'd settled back into Clan life surprisingly well, and if there were one warrior she'd want watching her back in battle, he'd be one of her first choices. She settled on her haunches to wait for him, nodding a friendly greeting.

"So just how many of you live here in...Thunderclan?" Eli asked after a few minutes of silence with a curious blink, the name the medicine cat had used for her group still strange to him.

"Quite a few," Mistpool meowed. "There enough of us to keep our territory safe and feed all of the hungry bellies, even with those unable to act as warriors." She flicked her tail proudly as she settled on the cool, fern-shaded earth.

"Warriors," Eli repeated, staring wide-eyed at the she-cat. "You mean...cats that fight?"

"Among other things," Mistpool mewed. "They patrol the borders, hunt for the Clan, and if need be, they defend our territory. We've been lucky the past couple of seasons - it's been relatively peaceful."

Eli relaxed a little. "What do they defend it from?" he mewed with a nervous flick of his ear. He hoped it wasn't too obvious he was probing for answers to his own predicament...

"Foxes, dogs, and badgers are the biggest threats, though thankfully we don't have to deal with them overly often," Mistpool began, watching Eli carefully to make sure she wasn't scaring him with the information. The forest wasn't exactly the safest place to be if one didn't know to watch where to put their paws. "Then there are the other Clans, WindClan, RiverClan, and ShadowClan, and cats who live apart from all of us."

The young cat's trepidation was replaced with curiosity. "There are other clans?" he meowed, tilting his head. He was tempted to ask why, but felt it might be disrespectful.

"Yes," Mistpool purred. "We each have our little corner of the forest. WindClan lives up on the moor, beyond the four Great Oaks. ShadowClan claim the marshes on the other side of the Thunderpath, and RiverClan's territory is across the river. Each Clan is adapted to their land...but it isn't impossible for a cat to leave one and join another."

Eli made a thoughtful purr and laid his head back down on the edge of the nest, thinking. "And you're a medicine cat?" he mewed at last, looking up at Mistpool. "Are you the only one?" he added, though he had already seen another cat tending to the supplies; one closer to his age. Could she really be a medicine cat, too?

Mistpool shook her head. "No, I have an apprentice; her name's Silverpaw. And each Clan has at least one medicine cat." Silverpaw chose that moment to poke her head out of the herb store and mew somewhat anxiously, "Mistpool? I had to move the coltsfoot to make room for the cobwebs...was that okay?" "That's fine," the blue-gray tabby assured the young apprentice.

Eli cocked his head in acknowledgement, eyeing the apprentice curiously. Clan life was a lot more complicated than he expected, and he felt he hadn't even scratched the surface.

"Um, hi," Silverpaw mewed, catching and returning the curious stare. "How are you feeling? Do you need anything?" Mistpool looked on, tucking her forepaws under her chest.

Eli's ears flattened in mild embarrassment. "Hello. I'm fine. No thank you," he meowed in quick succession, giving the apprentice a nervous smile.
