"Quite frankly, I'd like to have a go with it as well. Have some tea and crumpets aboard the ship, find out what makes it tick..." said Kane in response.

"You ent-t-ter my realm, and asssk wh-hat I'm doing h-h-here?" the entity said very matter-of-factly, its skull-like face turning quite violently toward Jacob. The eyeless sockets of its gaunt face seemed to stare into the man's soul. "Ahhh..." the being rasped, tilting its head slightly, only a few feet from Jacob's face. "Y-y-you have ssseen...a great many t-t-terrible things...Yo-ou don't fear me, assss he does..."

"How very...observant of you" said Jacob nonchalantly as he toyed with an aged looking combat knife in one hand casually. "And no, I didn't ask what you were doing here. It's quite obvious you are here talking to us because we're here. Question is, what is the end goal behind it? One would think you'd have...other, more important ghosty things to do than talk to a couple of explorers. Like scare the life out of unwitting teenagers, for example" he added...

"While on that train of thought," Kane added, "you wouldn't happen to be the reason this place is abandoned, now would you?" he asked the ghostly being...

"Thisss p-p-place has belon-nged to the dead for centuriesss," the entity explained, turning briefly to stare at Kane. It did not answer the question, however. "Y-you first. W-w-what are you two doing he-e-ere, mm? What isss your purpose in the h-h-house of the d-dead?" the gaunt being retorted, turning its sightless gaze back to Jacob.

Kane also looked to Jacob, shrugging as best as he could while inside the NT-SB suit. "Centuries here could have been the last twenty minutes. Can't exactly make a rebuttal for the 'House of the Dead' part, considering what we've seen already in the city..."

"Hmm," started Jacob as he gauged how much of their mission he should reveal to the spectre. The thoughts were veiled under a distraction as he tossed the blade upwards grip first, the weapon flipping in the air several times before dropping, the man catching it by the blade, flipping it in hand and putting it into a sheath behind his belt, under his coat where it belonged. "Curiosity. This world is...cluttered, to say the least. We're trying to find out what we can about it. This place just happened to be a location we stumbled upon en-route" he explained. It was true, and, as far as the village was concerned, complete. It revealed nothing of the greater scheme of their mission, but it was an irrelevant point here...

"C-c-curiosity isss a dangerous thi-ing," the entity replied ominously, staring hard at Jacob. "Ssshould you c-c-come across th-hat which doesssn't want to be known..."

"For all the humans... and humanoids in this realm, you should know that the nature of man is to understand his universe, and the strength of man is his ability to cope with unfortunate truths," said Kane, quoting something he might have read before during his university days. Honestly, he was getting a bit restless talking to the spirit, wanting to study it and make sure it posed to threat to him, Jacob or the Felicity, but at the same time the urgency of the tether situation could not be ignored...

"If it doesn't like our attention, then it need only ignore us. Seems most things here could be overlooked unless they wanted to be found. You, for instance" responded Jacob with a casual wave of a hand...

"L-l-life is like a beacon to thossse who have long since fo-o-orgotten its warmth," the entity rasped, pausing a moment before continuing, "a-a-as well asss those who w-w-want what they can-n-not have..."

"We'll be the judge of 'what we cannot have'," said Kane as pleasantly as he could manage. It was bad enough he was speaking to a ghost without it speaking in riddles...

"Fascinating" said Jacob, contemplating the spectre's words thoughtfully. "Mind telling us what it is you think we want that we can't have?" asked the Mercenary as he traced a finger along the side of his assault rifle casually...

The being made a bizarre, echoing cough, as if it were choking on something. Further inspection would reveal that this was actually some sort of laugh. "Alw-w-ways so quick to bring the f-f-focusss back on yourse-e-elves," it replied with another "chuckle". "P-p-perhaps you'll find a pla-ace here sssooner than I t-t-thought..."

"Wait a minute," Kane said, the apparition's words clicking suddenly. "'Find a place here' in the 'house of the dead'? You're saying we're going to die here by going ahead with our mission?" he inquired...

"You know what I've seen. The things I've killed. You know their calibre. You know they failed. Some of them might even be sharing your realm with you. I've put them in the ground once, I'll do it again. And again. And again. As many times as it takes to get it through their variously sized heads that they can't stop me" said Jacob with a shrug. He saw what the entity was implying. He had no intention of giving it the satisfaction of following through, however...

"H-h-hubris..." the entity replied with another sickly chortle. "There a-a-are thingsss taking pla-ace here, far beyo-o-ond your underssstanding," it continued, snaking its neck around to Jacob's side. "Go if y-y-you wisssh...We w-will meet again soon eno-ough," the being concluded ominously, retracting itself back into the shadows somewhat. Its gaunt face stared out from the dark, the charred bone barely visible in the sickly fog, silent and foreboding.

"Beyond our understanding? Well, not for long. Not while I'm here..." Kane thought, giving the phantom one last look before saying to Jacob over the comm-link, "We've wasted enough time. Let's get a move on to find that way down." He then started walking deeper into the abandoned village, referring to his map for some sort of subway entrance, or something else of the sort...

Quite suddenly, the display within Kane's exploration suit flickered, buzzing with some sort of static interference, before blacking out completely. Moments later, a single distorted image appeared in the center of the view. It seemed to be a picture of the village from ground level. In the foreground was an object that looked to be a large rusted grate partially covering a deep, sloping hole in the ground, large enough to be some sort of access tunnel. Then, in the blink of an eye, the image was gone and the suit's systems returned to normal, looking for all the world as if nothing at all had happened. And in fact, any diagnostics run on the suit would prove that nothing had actually happened, as the whole thing had taken place in the space of a second in Kane's mind's eye...

Rebin nodded, and headed for the shed. He moved quickly, and once he was at the door to it, he stopped. The probe was in here... but who knew what else could be inside as well. His plasma gun at the ready, he slowly opened the door, ready to fire incase something came from within...
