The tendril leaned toward the shots, the orb it sustained simply engulfing the rounds. It deformed momentarily as the kinetic energy appeared to be upheld within the ethereal sphere, but in no time at all it regained its rounded shape. Without warning, the orb split apart and elongated into four prongs of energy that spun rapidly about the tip of the tendril, electricity snaking in between them before being released as a concentrated jet of energy, blasting ahead of Jacob to intercept his path. The tether was actually taking advantage of his great velocity to increase its chances of scoring a hit!

Kane was given no time to consider this turn of events when the floating mace came hurtling at him. It bowled through the air, rolling all the way. A quick burst of the suit's thrusters sent it sliding to the side of the spiked ball's trajectory and it smashed into the ground with a weighty impact, causing the surrounding ice to crack and chip away. Kane looked at it with wide eyes as it continued to spin even as it was embedded in the floor, the spikes shearing away at the frost and concrete alike before the mace shot back into the air. There, it sent itself flying at Kane with an undeniable malice.

The entire time, Jacob's proximity to the pool was decreasing, until he was only two feet from the edge. Seeing the beam aimed right for him, the Mercenary leapt, flipping in mid air as he shot at the ceiling above the tendril, blowing loose a large shard of ice, easily three times the size of the average man and undoubtedly several times heavier, the jagged mass of ice plummeting over the tendril as Jacob landed in a crouch...

The team of Rift Wanderers approached the city, long trails of dust rising in the wake of the armoured vehicle convoy, the Wustenfuchs thundering over the deserted landscape as its dark grey armour was caked in dust, giving it a dirty, pseudo-tan tinge, giving it the faintest of resemblances to the desert fox from which its name was derived. Within, Dietrich assessed the situation. The Wustenfuchs was detecting several vital signs in the city. Not enough to warrant being called densely populated, but definitely enough that it arose suspicion. Their approach seemed to go unnoticed, and as the twin suns faded on either horizon, it seemed clear that whatever inhabited the city cared little for its defence...

The tendril stopped firing its beam and swerved upwards to intercept the falling ice sheet. Unfortunately for it, the ice came down before it could fire again and it disappeared in the humungous splash that ensued. The frozen chunk billowed up into a massive steam cloud that rolled out from the center of the chamber. The water churned and jumped before erupting again, a scalding plume that almost touched the ceiling where the ice fell from, hissing and frothing.

Across the room, Kane was finding it increasingly difficult to dodge the mace ball. After the first couple aerial charges, the thing seemed to tire with the tactic. Instead of grinding away at the chamber after impacting, the ball of spikes would simply turn around and continue without pause. It was less the mace rolling across the ice coated floor and more it gouging a massive trench as it went careening towards Kane, propelled by the swirling energies around it.

His thrusters flared up and he took to the air; aiming his launcher and sending off a shot. The beam rushed downwards and met the floor instead of the mace, because it reacted with inhuman reflexes. As the scarlet beam tore away at the ice, the mace was soaring at Kane at breakneck speeds. "Good grief!" Kane exclaimed, dropping his altitude just in the nick of time.

He watched the mace crash into the ceiling and continue across it, dislodging huge chunks of ice as it went before descending along the opposite wall and resuming its charge through the air as if nothing happened.

At that moment, a low roar came from Jacob's assault rifle, a purple streak stretching between his gun and the point the mace had almost reached, a large purple barrier forming around the mace as it reached that point, locking it in place with a Rift Field, disconnecting it from external manipulation as the Mercenary tossed a grenade towards the pool, the explosive wrapped in glowing green lines...

The disembodied roar reached new heights of bestial intensity, the mace ball rolling to and fro, trying to smash the barrier that snared it. Kane slammed down heavily on the icy floor, causing sprinkles of frost to fall around him. "My turn!" he said smugly, holding up the launcher and firing the tool-turned-weapon. The crimson beam lanced through the snare, hitting the ball point blank. A brilliant light went off, enclosed in the prison as the thing battled for its very existence, fending off being destabilized.

The explosion was a concentration of light in the center of the pool brighter than the latent glowing. Seconds later the water rushed upwards not as a plume, but as a bubble. A bubble that flashed to steam in the next few seconds, the super heated cloud rushing outwards, causing the angular, sharp shapes of the ice figures close to the tank to round off and melt. The steam condensed quickly in the freezing chamber though, returning to liquid and then flash freezing on the floor.

The basin itself was almost half empty and draining still, the walls ruptured by the grenade. It seemed that the tendril component had been destroyed as well, for it had yet to resurface. And indeed, it did not resurface; at least, not alone. What did emerge from the boiling water, steaming and furious, was a brass machine, hoisting itself from its resting place with six tendrils, five of which were mace-tipped. The center mass was a spheroid with all manner of gears turning and motors revving. It had two wicked sets of bear trap style metal jaws, an outer and inner set. The outer set was jagged with nary a space in between the stark black chompers, meant to slice things apart. The inner one was bronze colored and blunted, meant to crush.

The jaws parted, a terrible quake shook the room as the roar boomed over the duo's comm-link and it slammed its five maces into the walls...

"Lovely" said Jacob, as glimmering orange slits appeared along his boot soles. "Do what you can to try and keep it distracted. I don't want it to see me coming". Meanwhile, the Snare Launcher on his assault rifle was gradually cooling down and closing up. It would need a couple of minutes before it could be used again however, and until then, he needed to make sure the abomination forgot, or at the very least, was distracted from him...

Kane halted his assault on the death mace. The spiked sphere was covered in glowing seams, but had yet to be fully destroyed. "One distraction..." Kane muttered over the comm-link as the Launcher's blue holographic interface flashed into existence, the light reflecting off of the suit's armor. He rapidly slid bars of light across the holographic pane, moderating settings as to how the Rift energy was channeled through the gun. "... comin' up!"

He fired the Launcher again and this time the beam was laced with purple streaks of energy. It collided with the mace, earning a horrendous growl from the object; and this time, instead of just stripping away at the quantum fields that comprised the mace's existence, the beam enclosed it like some kind of three dimensional lasso.

The snare wore off and Kane swung the Launcher around, sending the furious sounding mace straight into the larger automaton. It exploded into a burst of magenta and purple light, sparks flying from the point of impact.

The construct leaned away from the force of the blast but quickly leveled out, stomping about in place until its jaws faced the scientist.

"Aaaand this is the part where it gets pissed at me, isn't it?"

Sure enough, the mechanized mouths flew apart, letting loose an otherworldly bellow of rage.

Meanwhile, Jacob had run to the opposite side of the mechanical beast before sprinting vertically up the wall, the ATAT system making sure he didn't slip or drop, practically negating gravity itself to keep him in position, though he knew he wouldn't last long with the icy surfaces of the room's walls and roof being damaged as they were by the heat. They had flash frozen once more, of course, but the fact they had partially melted in the first place meant the bond with their host surfaces wasn't as strong as it used to be. Almost giving voice to his concerns, he felt the ice underneath his feet shift slightly as he reached the ceiling, the man tossing a grenade down into the storage basin with immense force, the ballistic plunging into the little water that remained as a Snare followed, colliding with the weapon just as it met the Tether's core, Jacob already bolting for cover...

In response, the automaton wrapped itself up in its metal tendrils. A low droning began to resonate across the two explorer's channels, sounding uncannily like a monk in meditation. The familiar purple energy of the Rift's essence surrounded the machine; it was another shield as Kane had come to recognize them. The grenade exploded below the monstrous machine with a monstrous roar of its own, tearing apart the ground beneath it and leaving a craggy crater where the basin once was, hissing and smoking.

Yet the machine hovered in the aftermath, cocooned in its energy. Flame swept across the barrier harmlessly. A few more seconds later, the wall of energy binding it started to decay, dissolving away into specks of light before Kane's eyes. The cause became apparent from the energy signatures the core created- it was using its own command over the Rift to nullify the trap!

With the two vehicles approaching the large walled city, a certain figure was watching from afar, from the safety of a rocky alcove jutting from the side of a cliff. Elly kept her eyes peeled on the vehicles, her scythe cradled over her shoulder. She dared not move, but only watch. She had seen the battle between the tank and the tether, and the power these humans had in their grasp was terrifying. She knew if she tried anything, she would most likely be sucked into a black hole or vaporized into the next realm, her being a revenant or not. If she wanted what she had planned to work, she would need to think of a way to bypass their powerful weaponry...

However, it wasn't just the revenant that was watching the vehicles approach... several eyes watched from over the city walls, hungry lean eyes that waited...

"Kane! Use your cannon on it! While it's still reeling!" said Jacob, as a second charge went off blowing a chunk of ice off the ceiling, bringing it crashing down on the edge of the reservoir, damaging the ground badly and threatening to bring it collapsing on the storage chamber below, the slanted shape of the ice only causing it to slide more readily towards the damaged opening below the monstrous machine. Meanwhile, the Supersoldier made a mental note to have Kane look over modification options for the Snare. It's applications, while useful, left much to be desired...

Damian scanned the area ahead, as the APC and the massive tank rolled towards the walled city. Something about this place made Damian feel uncomfortable. The silence of the area, and the lack of movement was.... unsettling to say the very least. The scanners on the armored war machine failed to pick up any signs of movement, and life signatures were also notably absent in the region. Either there was nothing here, everything was dead... or there were creatures that not even the sensors were able to pick up. The only sensors that really picked up anything were the ones that picked up rift abnormalities, but that sensor was pretty much always sensing something. Either way, they had to go in- if there was another tether, it had to be destroyed. If it was the other probe, it may have gathered information on some of the other tethers. And if there were supplies... well, that one is self-explanatory.

"Alright... let's get this over with," Damian said into the communicators. "I'd rather not have to spend the night in this place."

The core issued another ethereal bellow as it's tendrils flew apart, spreading the shield with them. Expanding rapidly with disastrous effect, the shield tore apart everything around it in all directions. Materials, be it concrete or ice, were suspended in the field of purple energy before fading away entirely. In the aftermath, there were two craters, one below the core that extended for many meters and one above, a perfectly curved dome as if something had scooped it out. Their diameters were nearly as considerable as their depth, Kane forced to gun on his thrusters until he had reached the far wall of the chamber.

"I don't think that's reeling!" Kane shouted. He watched the machine as it floated above the epicenter of annihilation, its limbs undulating slowly inside a purple mist. "I think it's just negating gravity... angrily at that!"

"Attention unidentified city. This is PXXV-Streitaxt unit 0337 Wustenfuchs. Open this door, or open communications, or I vill be forced to make an entrance of mein own" came Dietrich's voice over the tank's comms as they approached the vast gate of the walled city, the Wustenfuchs rumbling powerfully as its engines shifted into a lower gear. Several moments went by in silence, despite the communication being sent on all frequencies. Sensors detected no change in activity beyond the wall, living or otherwise, and Dietrich quickly drew the conclusion that whatever life remained here was not intelligent. With that, he took the next step.

Conducting scans, he quickly identified the hinges of the massive gates; large gears beneath the surface, meant to raise and lower the gate when required. Taking aim with the secondary guns, the tank opened fire with two Schlag rounds, the rounds punching past the soil and colliding with the relatively shallow steel barrier around the gears. In the wake of the rounds, two large plumes of dust were kicked up, dropping visibility in the immediate vicinity down to nearly zero. A split second later, two fiery blue blasts shook the area as the Schlag rounds blew the barriers around the gate mechanism inwards, sharpnel tearign through and shredding the gears, destroying the lock, a loud rumble being heard as the massive gate slid downwards into the floor, hitting the base of the railed sheath with an earth-shaking boom, smoke, dust and debris being kicked up in it's wake, greenish blue fire pluming from the sides of the gate for a short while before burning itself out. And with that, the Wustenfuchs advanced, rumbling towards the gate and past it, all while eyes watched them from all sides...

Jacob meanwhile, had been studying their surroundings, using his Traction system to keep him moving in unexpected directions, keeping out of reach of the furious tether. Above the mechanical construct, the Operative noted cracks appearing, trickles of water raining down from above, barely visible to the untrained eye, falling towards the machine and being vaporised. The fact the cracks were dark with liquid told him all he needed to know, however. Taking aim with his shotgun, he opened fire, a single, solid Nano-Explosive round slamming into the core of the dome and obliterating it, bringing down a cascade of water, half-melted ice and mangled iron beams, among other debris, remnants of what had existed in this place prior. With the erosion of time and water weakening the wreckage's cohesion, there was nearly nothing stopping tens of tons of debris from plummeting right over the construct below, overwhelming it with sheer quantity...

A howl resonated over the comms, punctuated by a strange crackling. The hovering automaton swung its limbs about, sending the mace balls at the end into flight. Chained together by bright volatile lightning, the spiked spheres spun around like bolas, except instead of wrapping around what they hit, they annihilated. Whatever fell into the center was evaporated by the lightning binding them together, carving a path upwards through the cascade as the roaring machine began its ascent after them. The tips of its tendrils came together as it made its way to the surface.

"Remember when you asked me if my cannon could bring down a building!?" Kane exclaimed, raising an arm in front of his view screen as the dust of the demolition rolled out into the chamber. "I think we're gonna find out soon enough!"

"Well, that's one way to make an entrance" Rebin said, not surprised in the slightest. Of course... blast their way through when it didn't cooperate. He was beginning to wonder if there was anything in this world that couldn't just be blasted apart by the oversized tank... But then again, he would hope they wouldn't run into anything like that.... the less eldricht abominations they ran into, the better.

Yukari, on the other hand, had her attention on what she could see inside the city past the hulking mass of the Wustenfuchs. Past the front gate, the massive city was completely overgrown with plants. Numerous trees and vines of various species had covered all of the city. Streets and buildings were now covered in greenery, and a small river crisscrossed through the city. Odd creatures could be seen gliding from building to building, and if one could get a closer glimpse at them, they would see that these creatures were reptilian in appearance, about 7 feet long, and with crimson skin and blue stripes running across, and grey flaps of skin running down between their limbs. All Yukari could see from her position were a few of the large trees and very high grass. "I would hate to be the person who had to mow all this." She said, unaware of the scope of the setting. The city itself seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see, though if one squinted, they could barely make out the other end of the wall on the far side....

Damian followed in the wake of the thundering tank, driving at a brisk pace in order to get through this place as quickly as possible. The environment around them was... bizarre to say the least. I looked like something out of one of those traveler's guides, what with humongous trees and various other plants swallowing up what little of the structures within remained standing. What was this, the temporal rift or a scene out of an Indiana Jones movie? Either way, Damian chose to keep on the course, trying his best to ignore the truly bizarre, alien ecosystem they seem to have driven into. But he couldn't ignore everything that he saw or heard. From within his cabin, he began to pick up a signal from one of the buildings... a signal that he immediately recognized.

"Hold it, guys," Damian said into the communications system, "I'm picking up a signal from the probe. It's faint, but it's somewhere nearby..."

That brought Rebin's attention back to what was going on, as well as Yukari's. A probe, here? Small world, especially considering how close the other probe had been... hopefully this one wasn't a tether as well. Judging from the signal, it seemed to be off inside one of the buildings, or rather, the massive one that had crashed in half. "Alright, that's good to know." Rebin said. "It appears to be coming from the large building that has the top half broken off. We better prepare ourselves for what may be inside... This while city doesn't seem right." Indeed, he was getting an odd feeling about this. The whole area outside the city was an arid landscape... yet in here, a lush forest that overtook this city? even taking into account how odd this while place was... there was still something that was setting alarm bells off in his head... but what?

"Keep your eyes on your surroundings" warned Dietrich through the comms as he reached the entrance of the Wustenfuchs, the door to the airlock opening diagonally with a faint hiss. "Private! Will you be joining us?" he called across the vehicle to the crew's quarters...

Outside, several three legged insect-like creatures could be seen moving around, the carapace-clad tripods scuttling away from the vehicles and climbing up walls, lifting bits of the walls off before squeezing inside, revealing the buildings to be perforated with burrows. What stood out more notably however, was the fact there were two considerably powerful blips on the vital sign tracker, near the probe's beacon. One of them seemed directly over the beacon itself, as if it were emitting it. The other seemed just a few dozen yards away. Both, however, were stationary, and despite their power, were stable, hinting they were dormant, or perhaps sleeping...

"Have the Felicity move to a safe location. The last thing we want is our transport and communications system destroyed. Especially now that we're about to sever our connection to home" said Jacob as he was already pursuing the tether, careful not to draw it's attention as he ascended the semi-vertical surface of the upwards burrow of the rogue Tether...

Damian kept the weapons system on high alert once he picked up other vitals in the area. Soon, the doors of the APC opened up, leaving the trio to gather their supplies and head out. Damian was the first to get ready, for he already had all of his weaponry on his person. Damian soon stepped out of the APC, and waited for the others to join. The armored man kept his weapons at the ready. There were strange beasts roaming the area... who knew what lay ahead for them.
