"Crazy *******," Warren muttered as he watched Taleun ascend. Loading new cartridges into his bowguns, the hunter sprinted back into the fray, looking for an opportunity to strike. With his ally clinging to the beast's hide, it would make most forms of attack dangerous; with a sudden turn of the monster in question, Taleun could find himself at the cold mercy of a cloud of fiery shards.

Taleun was jolted upwards before he was thrown down again, the momentum of the monster's swing tossing him about as he hung on to it. It was all just more tension on his already injured shoulder, but the soldier did not let up until he caught a glimpse of Warren moving back into position. He dared to smirk as he released his hold on the monster's fur. "Just like clockwork-" he thought until things took an alarming turn for the worse.

Taleun grunted when he felt himself collide, not with the soft ground, but the rough palm of the monster's calloused, clawed hand. He fell onto his back and looked up into its hideous face, rainwater flowing along bony ridges and wrinkles in its skin. Its mouth hung open as it let out an ominous sound from the pit of its gut and without conscious thought, Taleun cocked his bowgun. The monster was raising him up, its jaws opening wider as it did so. Taleun scrambled along its palm, fighting against gravity as it tilted its hand towards its mouth. At the sight of the monster's huge fangs and the frayed strips of flesh stuck on its smaller teeth, Taleun felt a flash of terror.

"You're not going to eat me..." he snarled. Before his boots could lose their grip and send him tumbling into the monster's gullet, Taleun jumped with all of the strength he could muster in his legs. He sailed across the gulf that was the beast's jaws and came down on its face. He held on to the nearest handhold: a bony groove, and fired his bowgun straight into two of its four eyes. Flecks of pink were visible amidst the silvery shards, bits of scale chipped away by the shrapnel. The monster let out a pained bellow and writhed; blood ran down its cheek from a mosaic of crisscrossing slices. Strands of sinewy flesh dangled freely, the remains of the monster's eyes.

Warren, closing the distance with the beast, unloaded a flurry of flaming shards into the monster's ankles and knees. While also avoiding any mishaps with his ally above, he hoped the damage, coupled with the monstrosity's blind rage, would aid in bringing it down to a more manageable height...

Taleun made frenzied haste across the giant creature's face. He held his gun off to one side as he reached for grooves and ridges with his free hand, doing his best to keep steady as it thrashed and threw its weight around. He made it to the back of its head when he saw an arm coming right at him from the side, the vicious claws splayed. Without many options for escape, the Weywin soldier threw himself in the opposite direction of imminent death, falling from the beast's full height. Lightning struck then, blinding. The ensuing thunder was deafening and only served to make the next several seconds that much more disconcerting.

He came down with a thud on the back of its other shoulder, tumbling down along the bumpy skin of its arm. Unable to get a proper hold to slow down or anchor himself with his hunting knife, Taleun went flying past its elbow and was reunited painfully with the ground for the umpteenth time that night. He peeled himself from the muddy ground and half-staggered, half-ran away from the beast, his entire body aching from the ordeal. Behind him, with a tremendous boom and quake, the beast crashed onto one side, screaming as it burned.

"Show time!" Warren roared, exchanging ammunition in one swift, fluid motion. The Hunter closed the remaining distance between him and the beast, reaching its head in one heartbeat and unloading a sickly green substance into it in the next. The corrosive shards adhered to its face and eyes, pumping blood-coagulating venom into its body at an ever-increasing rate.

The monster, spirit bolstered by its fury, swung one arm around in response. It bowled Warren over in the broad, sweeping motion and managed to clip Taleun who was more than a couple of yards away as well, sending him back into the ground with a fresh surge of pain shooting through his body. The creature lurched upright with shuddering limbs but stood tall in spite of the toll the two warriors had on it.

Warren rolled as he hit the ground, ending up in an awkward but significantly more respectable position than he could have as he came to a stop. "I really hope that **** works fast!" he called to Taleun, pacing backward. The man's words were drowned out with another clap of thunder, as if the universe had already decided their fate.

Taleun gritted his teeth as he rolled onto his back. Rain seeped into his helmet, cold and distracting. It started to blur his vision, the monster a dark figure with hints of orange and yellow, warping in his sight. Blinking did not have any beneficial effect, the rain simply kept coming down. Instead of clearing his eyes, he steadied his breathing and raised his bowgun, pulling back on the sling until it clicked. He focused on the blob, angling the end of his gun on intuition alone. "Last shot before I have to reload," he told himself mentally.

"Make it count."

He sent off the last of his husks, the three-shot volley flying high into the sky. The beast continued to stand in place, fighting the agony it felt both inside and out. It growled and gnashed its jaws, but despite its posturing it was clear that the monster was unsteady. When the husks came down, the creature let out a tortured howl. The rounds, given an extra punch by the momentum of their arc, drove themselves into its hide before rupturing, sending metal bits slicing deep into its body. The internal damage was grievous, but the bleeding was sparse. Its blood vessels were already beginning to clog.

"Get out of there!" Warren called, watching the behemoth teeter. No longer concerned with retaliation, the man was instead afraid the mammoth creature would crush Taleun when it finally collapsed.

For possibly the first time that night, Taleun heard Warren clearly over the pounding rain. He rolled his head over to look in his direction, barely making him out against the surrounding area. He blinked his eyes and his vision cleared a bit, but not as much as he would have liked. Besides, if it weren't for the flames still burning away at the monster, it would have been too dark to see much of anything. But that did not matter, as he finally heard the man he was dispatched with to handle this mission. The man who disregarded recon tactics and barged straight into a firefight, drew the target out closer to civilian territory and complicated what should have been a routine operation.

"Damn you," Taleun growled beneath his breath, his body aching from his many blows at once, "damn you and every monster hunting mercenary like you."

His irritation quickly escalated. What would have been a simple gripe in any other circumstance quickly became his driving reason to power through the pain, to get over to the hunter and give him a piece of his mind. Taleun tucked his knees in as he rolled over and then pushed off of the ground with his free hand. Upright, he staggered a few steps before steadying himself. He walked slowly and deliberate towards the shadowed figure many yards away, one foot in front of the next.

And then the thudding impact of the gigantic beast behind him sent him falling back to his knees.

"Damn it all."

Warren held his breath. He heard, felt, and vaguely saw the extent of the monster's fall, but whether or not Taleun had got away in time was a mystery hidden in the murky shadows cast by their enemy's burning corpse. He was tempted to call out a second time, but another thought held his tongue: with the beast dead, those lesser creatures - too frightened of it to come out - may now make their appearance. Their triumph, in truth, was a gigantic bait for whatever else might be lurking nearby.

Taleun willed himself to stand once more, his arms sagging at his sides, barely able to maintain his grip on his bowgun. He was breathing hard, gritting his teeth. "Reload your weapon," he thought, diverting his attention from his bodily needs. "A soldier is always equipped and ready to fight."

Though his arms trembled with the effort, he raised his bowgun and retrieved more husks from his ammo pouches. He loaded up the gun and slung it over his shoulders so that it rested on his back. "Now walk," he told himself. His body tensed as his muscles responded to the command, hesitant and begrudging. He felt a surge of anger at his weak state then and practically growled as he hobbled onwards into the dark, unwilling to compromise with himself. There would be no rest until he was told that his job was done.

Taleun's position was a little more obvious now. Straining to hear the sounds of his ally's discomfort, Warren fumbled through the dimly lit murk in the hope he was going in the right direction...

Taleun's hand forcefully shoved against Warren's shoulder before grabbing on firmly, the soldier feeling an immense urge to both punch the other man in the face and use him as a support. Doing all he can to resist, Taleun growled through bared teeth, "Walk."

And so, through the storm, the two returned to the gates of Weywin. The rain was still coming down, but not nearly as bad as it was when the two left the battered plain. Taleun hobbled up to the guard post outside of the heavy wooden doors. It was a small stone building with shingled roofing that had the rain water falling away from the reception window that the soldier stood on the other side of. There was an access tunnel that joined one side of the building to the wall, allowing the watch to pass through the defenses. Two women were stationed there in cloth uniforms bearing the red and yellow colors of the city guard. They sat in their chairs, looking at the beaten and soaked man by the light of their torches.

Taleun flipped up his visor and said to them with a tired voice, "Open the damned gates."

"Tough mission?" one of them asked. Taleun shot her a glare.

"No conversation. Open the gate. I've got a report to make."

Without any further questions, the woman got out of her seat and walked down the access tunnel. A few minutes later, the doors creaked as they were pulled apart. The dirt road leading up the city entrance abruptly changed to cobblestone bricks beyond it, rows of buildings with lanterns dangling from metal holdings visible as dark shapes against the cloudy sky.

"You alright to go from here?" Warren asked nonchalantly as the two made their way further into town. "I need to see the guild rep. You know, for the...uh...reward." The man felt more than a little awkward, given his fellow's condition compared to his own. Though, they did have two very different parties to report to.

"No, I'm just going to lay on the floor now after all that walking we just did," Taleun replied with a not too subtle biting edge to his words. He pulled on his straps, causing the loose parts of his gun and his ammo packs to jingle, and forced himself to hobble just a bit faster than his counterpart down the drenched street. "It won't be too long," he told himself, "Just a small while until the road branches off and we go our separate ways."

Warren hung back, letting his companion hobble on. The man shrugged, but said nothing.

It wasn't long before the two parted. Warren was, admittedly, far too focused on the prospect of a good pay day to care about the other man's temper.

"You're back." As the Hunter approached, he could see a dark shape poking around in the recesses of one of the buildings. A moment later, a graying but nonetheless imposing man stepped out and hoisted a sizable pouch of coin onto the counter.

"In mostly one piece," Warren replied with an eager grin, eyeing the bag hungrily. The man across the counter nodded.

"I trust the 'problem' has been 'resolved'?" he asked, looking the Hunter over. "The hard way, by the looks of it."

"It's dead, Heinz," the younger man said plainly. "It wasn't the type to take advice, alright?"

"Fine, fine," the guild rep laughed, tossing the coinage into Warren's waiting arms. But as the Hunter turned away, the man spoke up again. "Warren, a minute?"

Warren hesitated. His body ached from the night's battle, and he was practically starving, and he knew what the old ******* wanted... With a sigh, he turned back.

"I got word a few hours before you got back. Something urgent," Heinz explained, resting his arms across the counter. The man was unusually serious.

"What is it now?"

"A village, not too far from here. They recently had an...incident, that ended with a nasty bit of fire."

"I'm not a carpenter, Heinz."

"I'm aware, lad," the older man replied, shaking his head. "The fire took out damn near all of their supply of Jahoyt hair. You're familiar, right? The Blue Death?"

Warren felt a little taken back. "Yeah...it's pretty bad in these parts."

"The other towns and villages - including Weywin - sent what they could to help them out, but they can only do so much without damning themselves to the same fate."

"And you want me to go out and get some more?" Warren asked, still rather irritable about the whole thing. "They can't just do it themselves? It's not like Jahoyt are hard to find."

"That's just it, boy," the guild rep began, frowning further, "the Jahoyt migrate before winter. They're hold up in the Darkwood, Warren."

An uneasy silence fell over the two men. Heinz, in years past, had been a Hunter himself before joining the guild. They both knew what this meant.

"You want me to go to the Darkwood?"

"Look, all you need to do is travel early, get there by daybreak, get the Jahoyt hair, and get the hell out before nightfall. Then It won't be an issue."

"You are going to kill me, Heinz. I hope you know that."

"Don't get your arse in a bunch. If this doesn't get done, then an entire village might be wiped out in a few months." Heinz looked uncomfortable about the whole thing, despite what he said. "It's a two man job, at least. The more you bring, the faster you get out."

"And I'm sure everyone in this soggy hellhole is just dying to go!" Warren looked away, rubbing his temples. After a few silent moments, he sighed. "I'll get it done. But I better get some hazard pay for this ****!"

"As soon as I get a vacation in the Ring, you'll get your hazard pay," the older man replied, watching Warren splash back down the road with a smug smile.

Regal flags fluttered about in the dying gales of the storm over an imposing fortress of stone located near the center of Weywin. There was a courtyard that surrounded the bastion, completely enclosed by black iron gates that ran around the perimeter. Lantern posts shed soft orange and yellow light on the many walkways that ran through the courtyard, flanked by small bushes and large trees. The building itself located a short walk's distance inside stood tall over the surrounding scenery and buildings, blocky and box-like at the base, gradually becoming more and more elegant the higher one looked. Rising upwards from the brick building was a large tower. Its roof was domed with a tall spire pointed to the heavens. It had many rounded windows that glimmered with firelight, small tapestries with icons and decorations adorning the exterior wall underneath them.

Deep within the Weywin Valorium, Taleun sat at a large wooden desk in his cloth uniform attire. Unlike most in the great fortress' darkened study, he was sporting bandages and bruises, one arm tied up in a sling. He was in the open area at the center of the library's hall, the place where the floor was tiled with black and white instead of being wooden planks or stone slabs. Four sets of stairs were on all four corners of the study, leading up to higher levels where shelves upon shelves of tomes were available to soldiers pursuing academic interests when they were off duty.

Taleun was not there for academics, however. He was there to fill out his after action report, his handling of the quill sloppy and shaky. It was the best he could do with his primary hand restrained in the sling. "And... that is why... work with freelancers... is... highly undesirable..." he thought as he wrote on the paper, his face contorted with concentration, his candle's flame dancing in his eyes. He glanced over to the side at someone who had stopped to look at him with a few books in their hands and they stammered a few attempted words before hurrying off into the shadowy aisles of the study. Taleun sighed before returning his attention to the report.

He left his equipment with the requisition's depot at the soldier dispatch office and in return they wrapped him up, made him drink a couple of medicines and then sent him off to the library to write down his account of the mission and verification of its success. "The sooner I get this over with, the sooner I can go to bed," he thought bitterly. It wasn't the most glamorous of times in his short run as part of the Recon Corps.

In time, Warren, too, found himself wandering the recesses of the Valorium. As a sanctioned freelancer frequently under the employ of the Guild, the man had access to such places - even if some parties preferred that he and his ilk did not. The man was on his way to see one such individual, actually; one of the few of Weywin's warriors actually willing to participate in Guild affairs. Though, Warren knew, their previous excursion may have changed this, judging by the other man's reaction and his current state as a result. But, with no other options, the Weywinian was his only lead.

Inquiring around, Warren found that, at least according to some guards near the start of his journey in the fortress, Taleun had taken up residence in the Valorium's library. With the injured warrior's attitude fresh in his mind, the Hunter nonetheless made his way inside...

Taleun heard chattering from elsewhere in the large room. He tried to ignore it, his hand scribbling across the page in an especially aggressive gesture, but the excited talk amongst friends spoken in hushed tones would not leave his mind. He clenched his jaws, redoubling the effort, but eventually he growled and looked up from his desk, eager to see what had everyone so giddy. It was late, it was rainy and they were in a library, what was there to be so enthused about-

"*******," the soldier said flatly to himself, one eye wider than the other and his mouth caught in the middle of a scowl and an uncomfortable smile. "*******, I thought I wouldn't have to see you again," he added as he saw Warren silhouetted against the candles. There were a few other figures standing at the book aisles, eager trainees and starting soldiers that hungered for the adventure a guild partner could provide, but he paid them no mind.

"The ******* is in the library. Why is the ******* in the library?"
