As soon as the humans entered the second floor, a half-dozen figures froze. Slowly, so as not to attract attention, the predators lowered themselves into a half-crouched position. Not one made a sound. Each one was fully prepared to ambush the two humans; their wickedly curved claws were drawn back, held at the ready. With various places to hide, and the brains to use overturned furniture as such, they couldn't be immediately spotted unless they moved....or a human quite literally walked into them.

looking through the night vision scope of his assault rifle, Jacob spotted one of the Raptors just as it ducked behind a piece of furniture. "We've got company. Raptors hiding in the second floor landing. behind the furniture. probably more than one. Don't let your guard down" whispered Jacob as he reached just outside the doorway, turning only once David had taken charge of keeping his aim on the door, the ex-SAS soldier continuing his ascent. His goal lay just above. He didn't need to gun down these creatures, and so long as they did not charge, he would be given no reason to kill them...He knew from the sounds however that they weren't the only things in here. Meanwhile, a distant drone began to grow louder...something distinctively unnatural...

"Remember what I said about telling me to breathe?" David thought as he edged past the gaping doorway and then up the stairs with the barrel of his bullpup trained on the threshold. His silence demonstrated his focus on the task at hand. This was no time for banter. The strange drawl was becoming more pronounced as the seconds went on, a low hum that lingered in the stale air.

Inside the structure, also on the second floor of the building, a heavy creature thumped around, heading towards where the humans were. Whatever it was, it was growing closer. And it was definitely not a raptor.

A screeched alarm from another member of the pack, further into the second floor, made the raptors waiting to ambush the humans flinch, and several heads turned, nostrils flaring. Something else unwelcome was in here - something just as much a threat, if not more of one, than the approaching humans. After an exchange of uneasy glances, two of the ambush party broke away from the group and moved off at a fast trot, away from the humans, to find and help deal with the source of the disturbance. The rest of the raptors stayed crouched, the muscles in their calf muscles and thighs twitching with the urge to maim these intruders.

The large theropod flinched as his dromeosaur prey let out its screech of suffering. The large creature ripped off a chunk of its prey's flesh, gulping it down swiftly as it listened intently for the clacking of approaching claws. The crested theropod froze, as it waited for any signs of raptors- or something worse- to attempt to attack it. its claws were readied to strike, as was its tail... it also prepared to run, if worst came to worst... after all, it was better to live another day than to fight a pointless scuffle and lose...

the response was nearly instant. The Dilophosaur had been in the Raptors' crosshairs for several minutes. One of the Raptors of the attack group sent after the humans had mistakenly run into the vacated area around the predator, leading to it's own demise as well as bringing forward the trap that had been set for the invader. It did little to reduce the effectiveness of the attack however. A long trilling shriek rang out through the building as the Pack Leader coordinated the attack at a distance, as two Raptors leapt from the shadows, colliding with the Dilophosaur's flanks on either side, killer claws sinking deep into the larger predator's flesh, as more Raptors flooded into the room from doors, windows and holes in the surroundings, the red-eyed black male just beyond one of the doorways watched, a malevolent glint in it's eyes as it's lessers proceeded to overwhelm the invader on their turf. Its intrusion had been tolerated until it struck...that single action had sealed it's fate at the claws of the massive Deinonychus pack....the chicks would eat well tonight...

The chaos kicked up by the pack a few rooms away acted as a perfect distraction as Jacob pressed on up the stairs, heading towards the third floor, reaching the doorway, his aim pointed at any angle that a Raptor could suddenly step out of or drop through to cut his path off, leaving nothing to chance. his finger was poised to squeeze the trigger at the slightest provocation, and the ex-SAS soldier had no moral issues to keep him from mercilessly cutting his path to freedom. In this place, only one law stood; the law of the jungle. And it was a law he knew well...

The snarls and hisses that accompanied the conflict in the room echoed throughout the building. The affinity for violence was a testament to the genetic tampering that went into the creation of the creatures. Their lethality and willingness to shed blood meant their revival from extinction could very well be short lived; torn apart by a game of survival with constantly elevating stakes as different species came in contact with each other. It was the first time in the history of the world where weapons of war fought their own battles with each other.

The familiar droning was even louder now and as David came to a stop behind Jacob, he knew the end was near...

The Dilphosaur was no match for the hordes of raptors that descended upon it, but that didn't prevent it from trying. Kicks, slashes, and tail whips hit a few raptors that came close, but there was little hope for the crested predator. His eyes slowly began to close, as blood dripped from his grievous wounds and from the feeble bodies of the two raptors he managed to kill in the frenzy. In a matter of moments, the creature collapsed from blood loss, awaiting its fate as the raptors tore into his hide....

The larger predator was shortly on the floor, being disemboweled. Hot blood seeped outward from the body in small streams, as crimson-stained muzzles were raised in barking victory cries.

From an air vent above the two humans, a badly decomposed human head that had been stashed there by a gang of compies fell. Aided by its state of rot and the tremors created by the tyrannosaurus' footfalls, it had been gradually leaning toward the opening, until at last gravity took over and sent it over the edge. It collided heavily with the second of the two humans ascending the stairs, knocking him back down several feet of unforgiving concrete. As soon as he landed at the bottom of the stairs, one of the raptors waiting in ambush seized the opportunity and pounced, landing on its target and drawing back its head for a vicious bite at his neck.

Despite the throbbing pain where the decayed skull hit and the dull ache in his back, David was able to swing his rifle up, blocking his exposed neck while he brought his feet up, kicking the raptor square in the chest and sending it tumbling back from the strength of the blow...

"Oh bloody hell!" snarled Jacob as he backed away from the doorway towards his comrade, hearing the tumbling sound of the burly man falling down the stairs. As little as he cared for most of his team mates on this mission, David had actually proven he was valuable; a trait that may well have secured the man's life. at the same time however, it arguably put Jacob at greater risk...

The raptor gave a bark of surprise as it was flung clear and landed hard on one side. One of its fellows jumped over his fallen packmate to get at the human as two more, growling softly, moved in from the sides at a light trot, sticking close to the shadows. One of them, a small female with a scarred muzzle, paused and sniffed briefly at the decayed head and recoiled, curling her lip as if in disgust. The second raptor to get to the downed human lunged forward to sink its teeth deep into his shoulder and began attempting to drag him away, as the one that had been kicked flipped itself onto its feet and gave a rattling hiss.

David gritted his teeth as he felt the tips of the raptor's teeth bearing down on his shoulder. Though his puncture proof combat suit was unable to pierced; he was surprised by the sheer power of the bite. With his opposite hand, he drew one of his knives, plunging it into the raptor's eye seconds later and forcing it to withdraw...

"Stay down!" commanded the ex-SAS soldier as a heavy clack was heard, a frag grenade dropping behind the Raptors, the angle placing it at such a position that it didn't threaten the fallen David, but would be near fatal to the Raptors standing down the stairwell and moving towards him, as well as any following through the second floor doorway. Jacob ducked, pressing against the wall of the upper stairwell to avoid being clipped by a stray piece of shrapnel as the explosive went off around the Raptors' feet and behind their backs....

The ambush party was caught completely off-guard by the blast, one of them letting out a cut-off screech of agony as a piece of shrapnel buried itself deep into its flank. The other three were knocked off their feet, the sudden explosion and heavy fall stunning them - or killing them, as was the case with one who landed at an awkward angle, the fall snapping its neck. Of the raptors who had come to see what the commotion was, some were fortunate enough to still be outside the stairwell and, panicked, hurried to duck behind what cover there was to avoid flying debris and packmates.

David lowered his arm in the seconds after the explosion, effectively protecting his head and eyes from its effects. "Note to self, get a helmet to go with this suit" David thought. Seizing the falter in the raptors' attack, the mercenary spun himself around, sheathing his bloodied knife simultaneously as he hurried up the stairs and then reached for one of his last flares. He pulled it out of its compartment, bit off the cap and quickly moved it away from his face before it came alive with a reverberating hiss and a bright, whitish-glow. He dropped the flare behind him, warding off the recovering raptors from giving chase.

"Let's get moving. Our doorway out of hell's not gonna wait forever" said Jacob, signalling to move forward, going through the doorway facing one direction alongside David, who was facing the other, swiftly clearing the path to the exit as the rhythmic roar of machinery could be heard beyond the doorway of the third floor control room, beyond which was a metal stairway to the roof. Within the room was the radio comm equipment, which would've been used to contact the mainland and any allied ships in the area, as well as communicating with the other base. on the opposite end of the room were a series of lockers and tables with files on them, undoubtedly containing communication information. The most noteworthy piece of equipment in the room however, was in the centre. a large surface with what looked like glass over it, now shattered and riddled with bullet holes. Jacob however, knew what it was. It was a HOTMAP system. Holographic Tactical Mapping system. It served as a map that was fed meteorological data, strategic positions, tactical information and other intelligence, recieving heavily encrypted information and translating it into visual data, simultaneously relaying the encrypted form to the comm systems to provide other bases with the information. It was usually only found in highly active military bases. Some of the wiring to one side of it was disconnected however, and tools could be seen to one side. Taking a guess, Jacob figured this base was due for a major upgrade. It may well have been slated to be the Centre of Operations for US forces in the region, once the research was in it's final stages. The irony was stunning...

Compared to the other areas, the radio room was in considerably good condition. Signs of struggle were clearly visible but aside from the destroyed HOTMAP and discarded furniture, the room was intact. The radio equipment, though dusty and in disrepair, was not outright damaged. There were no dinosaurs in the control room as well, a fact David found surprising as he made his way after his battle forged partner.

Sweeping through the room with a practised professionalism, Jacob soon reached the door on the other end, kicking it open as he went through, the door swinging on it's hinges and slamming against the railing circling the edge of the roof of the second floor, a set of stairs to his right leading up onto the roof of the third floor, upon which lay two water tankers, as the roar of rotor blades reaches his ears, a large sleek black helicopter closing in on the facility, a ladder unfurling from it as it reached the roof, hovering above the base. on either side of the craft sat a machine gunner, manning the mounted miniguns, acting as protection and scanning for any potential threats as they awaited Jacob and his apparent comrade...
