The attack came suddenly, with no warning, visible, audible, or otherwise. A head darted out, jaws clamping around the leg of one of the humans straying at the back of the group. A second set of snapping teeth joined the assault, and together the two predators unbalanced their prey. The human fell on its back. With a smooth motion, one predator sank its teeth deep into the prey's neck, and the other worked at ripping into its gut with clean strokes of the lethal claw on its foot. It was over before the human had time to make a sound. The raptors stayed low, moving a little bit away from their kill. One down....

Barnes casually tossed over his shoulder, "Hey Tom, how's the rear?" No response. Barnes slowed slightly, turning to look over his shoulder. "...Tom?" Nothing, just silence. Barnes cautiously raised his Mossberg shotgun. "Alright, enough messing around, pal." Naturally, the man's voice suggested that he certainly didn't think the merc was playing games...

Rick, closer to the front of the group, heard the tone in Barnes voice the third time the squad leader spoke. It only furthered the unease he felt at being in this high grass. He glanced back at where Tom had been and saw that there was only grass where there should have been a man...

Hiero stopped and looked to the rear, suddenly his instincts kicked into overdrive. With him being the last of the rear he would take no chances now, he flicked off his safety and leveled his rifle with his line of sight.

The alpha female Deinonychus was creeping closer and closer to her target, calf muscles twitching in anticipation. The raptors who had come with her were fanning out, cutting off the escape routes, so that whichever way the humans ran, no way was safe to go. She narrowed her eyes in satisfaction. Blood would stain the grass red before she was satisfied.... The two who had taken down the human didn't pause to snack; they killed and slunk off, efficient and silent as ever. The hunt was still on...they could come back to their catch later.

Max stepped closer to the others, still keeping his shotgun at the ready. He'd come too far to die now.... especially from some damned raptors. If anything, he'd die fighting that damned rex.

Being as close to the group as she could be, Persephone had her crossbow at the ready, though in a situation like this, she would have perferred to use her magnum. She reached into her backpack, to make certain that she had plenty of arrows, and feeling them, she was somewhat relieved. Whatever preadators were here now, were about to get impaled with deadly accuracy...

The humans were more alert now, but it was no problem. The raptor pack still held the upper hand. With one human lying dead, and the ambush in place, the alpha female's victory seemed almost guaranteed to come. Her jaws parted slightly and she darted forward, zigzagging past the big one at the front of the group who had wounded her mate. As she passed she flicked out a hand, raking her taloned fingers along the back of his calf. She sped away before he could turn, then slowed down so the grass stilled in her wake. As she circled around to prepare another attack, one of her packmates let out a deliberate noise, to distract from her location.

"Gah! Sonuvab**ch!" Barnes shouted as pain lanced up his leg. He staggered, grabbing onto the nearby Jenkins for support, startling the scientist. After a second, Barnes got back to his feet and tested his leg. It hurt to put pressure on, but it wouldn't stop him from at least jogging. Good. "Everyone, double-time it! To the base, move!" He fired a couple shells in the direction of the noise he heard, hoping the impressive report of the shotgun would at least stun them momentarily. Jenkins was the first to move, pushing a couple mercs ahead of him. "There's a small maintenance shed on the way there! We can hole up in there for the time being!" Barnes didn't need any more motivation to kick himself into high gear. He couldn't move too fast, but at least the mercs could cover him...

The Alpha Male watched from a distance, a few females close by. The humans were agitated, frightened, like most prey they ambushed. They would run soon, and that would be the proper time to strike...

The raptors started to tighten the noose, closing ranks. One or two more let out barks in response to the gunfire that, if one listened hard or was paranoid enough, would seem to sound almost like mocking laughter. The alpha female licked the blood from her claws and growled softly. If her claws had gone in just a bit deeper....but their target was wounded now. That was the key. If they split up the group of humans like a herd of herbivores, they'd probably end up panicking and leaving him behind...that was when the raptors could deliver the fatal blow.

Rick began moving as fast as he could through the high grass, turning just long enough to fire a burst from his weapon in the direction of one of the barks, hoping to at least startle it's owner. Turning his attention back to what was ahead of him, the merc listened for the next sound that might betray the general direction of one of the attackers. Whatever was attacking the group, it sound like there were at least three of the creatures from the noises that had come after the attack on Barnes...

The barks came faster and from every direction, making it impossible to guess just how many animals there were, or where exactly they were. One thing was abundantly clear though; they were getting closer. A pack of animals working as a single unit with one goal - to get the humans unnerved and running. Even the bravest man would find his nerve slipping in the face of a coordinated group assault from the fast, intelligent, cunning killers. Especially when they couldn't see the predators....

Hiero rushed quickly with the rest, not bothering to fire his weapon and slow himself, in slung his rifle back over his shoulder and reached for a 1919 Hand Grenade from one of his many pouches on his harness. He pulled the pin, counted two seconds, and dropped it while he shouted "GRENADE". Anything that followed them would hopefully get one nasty, deadly surprise.

"Waste not want not, eh?" said Jacob simply in response to the discovery. extra equipment would certainly be of use. And as far as he could tell, David and himself would make much better use of it than anyone in Barnes' "team", if one could call it that. "Let's not waste any time. Don't want Jenkins pulling off whatever he's planning to do" he said...

Meanwhile, on the roof of the main facility, a dark scaled predator watched, acute hearing locked on the screams and gunfire in the distance. them again....still. It made no difference. they would be slaughtered just like their predecessors...

"Definitely" David said as he was putting the bag down on the passenger side floor. If they could catch up to the group and stop Jenkins, the contents of the bag wouldn't even be an issue. That wasn't guaranteed however; as so many things could change in an instant. With that in mind, David pressed on into the swamp, the powerful Humdinga speeding across the obstacles in its way.

Maxwell fired a shot randomly into the grass before he sprinted with the others. Those damned raptors had come back for them! But when he saw them.... he'd blast those brutes back to the creteceous period. His shotgun was primed to kill, and it hungered for blood! Holding both his knife and shotgun tightly, he caught up with Rick and the others...

The raptors followed with swift, silent steps, running at an easy pace that wouldn't tire them quickly. Spread out on either side of the human's party, they kept pace, still barking. Occasionally one of them would let out the odd shriek, to scare the humans into thinking they were closer than they were and running faster.

The grenade exploded, amazingly causing little damage, though the boom was certainly deafening enough. Hopefully, the blast would deter the Deinonychus for a short time, and that was all Barnes would need.

Unfortunately, that was when the second group of predators decided to make their move. Barnes' head snapped to the left as he saw a blur of motion, and one of the raptors leaped from the grass, aiming straight at him, legs first. Barnes brought his shotgun up in the nick of time, holding it parallel to his chest to absorb the blow of the leaping Deinonychus. The move worked, and the startled dinosaur let out a screech as her legs hit the gun instead of a solid target. The force of the attack still knocked Barnes flat on his back, but also served to swat the Deinonychus to the side, the predator hitting the ground on her side, momentarily stunned. One of the mercs running by noticed Barnes on the ground, a man by the name of Jon. He moved quickly towards the Lieutenant, saying, "Come on, boss, we ain't got a--" His statement turned into a strangled cry as a second Deinonychus, covered in blood red feathers, tackled the merc from the side, his jaws clamped around the man's throat. As the man fell, the raptor quickly and cleanly tore his throat out in a spray of blood. Barnes, tried to skitter backwards away from the animal, but it didn't take long for it to turn to him, licking the blood from its scaly muzzle. The female from before recovered, moving to intercept Barnes, but a screech from the male made her back down. Barnes swallowed nervously, reaching out for the shotgun he couldn't quite see, as the Alpha Male stalked patiently towards him to get his own revenge...

The alpha female hissed from behind the human, the sound low and sinister. The other raptors went on snapping at the heels of the fleeing humans, driving them further and further away from the fallen one, sensing that this was the one they were after.

It wasn't long before the swamp began to give way, the water becoming shallow and muddy as they closed in on land...and the second facility...
