Space E-war Excerpt

Where good and bad RPGs and E-wars go to die.

The rumbling sands gave the Covenant enough time to ready their weapons. They didn't quite expect the Seeker, however, and they especially didn't expect him to go flying straight into the air. Still, the soldiers managed to open fire on the synthetic from every direction, the hail of plasma enough to melt Ecliptor into slag...

The sleek synthetic tucked into himself, shrinking his profile drastically by balling up and making it easier to maneuver in the air, making the most of momentum and torque. A burst from his pulsepack shifted his direction into an arc as well as applying a spin to his trajectory. When he hit the ground, he rolled for several yards past his targets before popping back onto his feet in a crouch, his glowing hands firing a wave of energy into the ground, blasting up another cloud of dust. While it would appear the robot was returning to the sands again, his true motivation had yet to make itself known.

He was going to make sure its entrance would be exactly where he wanted it to be.

The Covenant ceased fire to shield their eyes from the blast of sand, a few staggering from the attack. Angry growls and barks rang out between the soldiers as they stumbled their way clear of the dust cloud, raising their weapons in the direction Ecliptor had disappeared...

The Seeker rushed out of the screen of sand, his arms held off to his sides as he sprinted. A single wrist blade was on full display, the glare of the arid sun running along the deadly edges. He swerved around one stunned Sangheli with a spray of sand and then impaled the Covenant trooper through the back with the sword. With his other arm, Ecliptor grabbed the soldier's rifle and used the Sangheli's shoulder as a brace to support it.

Ecliptor fired rapid bursts of plasma, turning his captive towards the hostiles as if it were a turret.

The Covenant soldiers returned fire at Ecliptor, aware that their companion being used as a shield was dead anyway. One particularly bright Unggoy tossed a Plasma Grenade at the Seeker, the blue sphere adhering to his Sangheili meatshield. The explosion was powerful enough that it would take both of them out...

In response, Ecliptor pulled his sword from the Sangheli and in the same motion; retracted the blade while channeling an energy burst. He slammed his palm against the soldier's back before it even had the chance to fall and sent it flying into the Unggoy with the pulse, the impact flooring the unfortunate soldier and the subsequent explosion erasing it from the battlefield.

Ecliptor ducked down and fired the plasma rifle into the groups of Sangheli positioned around him, his shots quick and random in the general direction of the opposing forces. He broke into sprints and dropped into rolls in unpredictable sequence, making himself as distracting as possible.

The Covenant, furious that their target continued to evade them, were caught off-guard when Ecliptor's pursuer emerged from the ground in an explosion of dust and sand. A single Arachnid Warrior, screeching in blind fury, charged from the fresh hole it had created at the nearest Covenant soldier. The unfortunate, who happened to be a Kig-yar with his back to the rampaging insect, was impaled by one of its swordlike forelegs and lifted, squawking and flailing, into the air. The Warrior almost immediately tossed the mortally-wounded Jackal aside and charged at the next soldier, this one being an Unggoy. By this point, the remaining Covenant had recovered from the shock of the Bug's emergence, and focused all their fire on the Warrior.

The Arachnid, and its unlucky victim, seemed to disappear under a hail of plasma and explosive needles, and by the time he Sangheili commanders had ordered them to cease fire, all that was left was a scorched patch of earth and a few charred, insectoid limbs. There was no sign of the Unggoy, who had apparently been completely vaporized...

There were barely audible swiping sounds behind the troopers distracted with the alien insect. Ecliptor tore up the sand as he ran on past them, the blood splattered swords sliding back into their sheaths in the Seeker's arms as he went. Blood spurted from the precise incisions in the back of the soldiers' necks, the cuts deep and fatal.

On his back as he made his retreat was what the Seeker viewed as his rightful reward. He was denied the chance to study new organic lifeforms -ones that would have attempted to rip him limb from limb, but still- so he took one of the Covenant plasma rifles as his own.

Even as several more soldiers fell to Ecliptor's attacks, the rest of turned to watch the Seeker sprint away, one of their Storm Rifles in tow. They were not particularly incensed about that: the Storm Rifle was a standard-issue automatic plasma rifle used by most lower-ranking Sangheili. One was no great loss. However, the frustration they felt at gaining several casualties from a single intruder--a synthetic, no less--was a stinging, infuriating feeling. Even so, they channeled such anger back into their proper work, disposing of the new bodies and scanning for any more seismic activity, in case the Warrior had not been alone. Seeing as Ecliptor seemed to be gone for good, the Covenant Harvester, still safe inside the Battlecruiser, was being prepped for deployment as quickly as possible. The delay caused by Ecliptor's attack cost them time and resources, and they would need to make up for it...

"...What the hell is it doing?" asked Tanya as she stared at the TAC-MAP and the holographic image being projected by the second scout vehicle, monitoring the scene from afar, noting the trails of smoke and explosions riddling the base, and the retreating Seeker sprinting across the dunes. "He's breaking off. And, he's done exactly as he always does; reconnaissance. He's gathered information about our potential enemy, he's studied their combat strategies and how to counter them, and he's probably retrieved some technology of theirs to study" said Khuurava with a smirk, mandibles clicking in amusement. "He's also potentially luring them right to us" responded Tanya as she turned around and leaned against the TAC-MAP table, crossing her arms as she eyed the Khurakra expectantly. "Ha. With his stealth tech? They'd have a better chance of finding a fish on Tuchanka" snorted Khuurava amusedly. "Right. So now what? We can't exactly tell them to leave" said the woman gruffly, evading the subject to avoid admitting defeat. "We'll have to see how the Suits react. They'll be slow and careful to respond, and so will we. Once we know what they're gonna do, we can work around it. No need to lure unwanted attention from an unknown enemy" said Markus calmly as he sat down in one of the chairs. "Ecliptor. Status report" said Khuurava through his comms, trying to get in touch with the AI...

"Compromised frame integrity and peripheral system damage. This one is still operational," was Ecliptor's simple reply as he ran. In truth, his words did little to reflect the scalded armor that clung to his slim body, peppered with holes where stray flecks of plasma residue burned away the metal, leaving discolored rings. They did not even address the damage to the hardware underneath, potentially worsened by the Seeker's foray underneath the sand. But whatever hindrance blighting him now would be rectified in due time. In that time, he would be studying the type of weapon that inflicted these figurative wounds.

By the end of that time, he intended to have it adapted to his own purposes...

"Understood. Get back here soon, but make sure you are not tracked. We cannot afford to have the Covenant follow you back here" responded Khuurava simply before shifting his gaze to the others in the room. "Show me your stealth systems. I need to know just how likely it is we'll have Covenant Dropships swooping down on us" he said, Markus glancing towards Tanya, nodding his approval, Tanya leading the Mercenary out without another word...

With any damages repaired, the Covenant continued to reinforce their camp. They couldn't afford another ambush like the last one. Comm antennae, comm relay stations, sniper towers, weapon crates, shield barriers, and various other devices were set up at strategic locations through out the camp, with a fresh platoon of soldiers and supplies to replace spent plasma batteries and dead or wounded troops. They would not be so easily attacked again...

Meanwhile, the Covenant craft above were scanning the surrounding area for signs of life underground. The presence of an Arachnid Warrior attacking the camp directly was proof enough that some had escaped their wrath, there was something else hidden in the nearby mountainside. Something technological. And that piqued the Covenant's interest quite a bit...

At the last leg of his sprint, Ecliptor gradually slowed from an all out marathon to a jog across the rocks that rose from the dunes. Heading up the natural ramp into the courtyard, he slowed to a nonchalant walk. "This one has returned," he said to Khuurava tactfully and without breaking stride, approached the waiting form of the Marauder. He used a pulse-burst to launch himself onto one of the landing gear and climbed up into its housing; his destination being the small room in the bowels of the craft he made his own.

The Covenant Harvester was gigantic, and its dramatic air drop from the hangar bay of the Battlecruiser was not only spectacular, but potentially deadly to anyone even near ground zero. Large thrusters on the underside of the beetlelike monstrosity of a machine eased its descent, and it managed to slow to a reasonable speed before hitting the earth with a deafening thud, a massive dust cloud forming in the midst of its jointed, claw-tipped legs. It had been deployed facing the mountainside, and well within range. Covenant began to swarm around it as the dust began to settle, setting up guard posts, moving inside to provide security, and various other duties, while the Harvester itself began to come to life. As soon as it was at full power, the hunt for the Arachnids--and that mysterious signal--could begin.

"Have you gathered any information of worth?" asked Khuurava as he walked out of the building, approaching the ship as its sensors informed him of the Seeker's arrival. the vehicle's stealth systems were active, matted projector panels on the ship's roof giving back an image of the ground beneath it, passive sensors locked into the Rebels' local sensor array to keep track of comings and goings in the area without using an excessive amount of power, practically nullifying it's signature on any sensors the enemy may point its way. It could not, however, hide the town, and had to rely on the Rebels to hide themselves. The fact they still existed was a statement to their success...

Meanwhile, far outside the atmosphere, in the outer orbit of the planet, a massive space installation monitored the Covenant ships' actions, its seeming controllers silent for now, but watching. It was too early to decide on a course of action, and it was useful to gather intel about their target beforehand....The time for an attack would come soon enough...

Over their private channel, the Seeker spoke: "Military occupation of sizable proportion. Individual troops are varied in nature." Images of the various ranks in the Covenant assembly were transferred to the mercenary for future viewing. "Equipment is notably based on condensed energy rather than ballistic weaponry. Soldiers are outfitted with shielding which makes long range engagement with low caliber guns undesirable." Following the statement, Ecliptor sent the images of the occupation zone's then-current security measures. "Encampment is defended by aerial vehicles and turrets."

The front of the Harvester's "head" began to glow a bright, neon green, before exploding outward into a condensed beam of high-intensity plasma. The plasma drill was kept on a lower power setting for the time being, slowly but steadily powering through the rock of the mountain. Normally, it would simply be fired at full power to blow a hole in the side of the mountain, but there was something on the other side the Covenant did not want to damage. Something Forerunner in origin, if their scans were correct...

In space, the Sangheili Ship Master had switched position with the captain of the Supercarrier, making it the flagship of the operation. It had cloaked shortly after the battle with the Super Transport and the commander transfer, well aware of the space station's presence and not wanting to incite any retaliation from it until the task force decided what to do about it. The Ship Master was very intrigued by the ground team's discovery, and kept his ships over the camp, in case more troops would be needed to secure whatever was down there. The second Battlecruiser and the Assault Carrier remained in high orbit with their cloaked Supercarrier companion, awaiting further orders for the time being.

Shortly before the Khurakra reached his ship, he paused, considering the data he received. "Tend to your injuries and await my return. I'm going to investigate Sar's merchandise before we leave...Maybe it'll give us something useful to use against our potential foes" said Khuurava as he walked around the back of the Marauder and towards the small building Sar used as his base of operations...

Meanwhile, aboard the Covenant warships, two signals were picked up through their Communication systems. One seemed of standard complexity, coming from a base on the other side of the planet via several satellites circling the planet. "Attention Covenant Invasion Force: You have entered restricted Kron Enterprises airspace. State your purpose or risk military response. Repeat: You have entered restricted Kron Enterprises airspace. State your purpose or risk military response". The other signal however was highly advanced and alien in nature, coming across as both unintelligible and undecipherable. The apparent language of the signal wasn't present in any Galactic translation program, and the source seemed impossible to trace...

The Ship Master was quick to respond, his own transmission bounced off of the Assault Carrier to make it seem like he was still aboard the smaller ship. "I am Ship Master Kal 'Ontom. We are here to investigate a unusual alien artifact and quell a potential Arachnid infestation. Your assistance is not required." The Sangheili was no fan of kow-towing to corporations, but he had no time to deal with them. If they tried to attack, he would not hesitate to destroy every last ship they had. The Covenant ships intercepted the alien signal, working to translate it, and coming up with no results. Whatever it was, it was unrecognizable, which was both interesting and concerning. If it was coming from the Forerunner structure inside the mountain, they would have at least recognized the symbols...

Sar's small shop was, outwardly, ramshackle and unassuming, just like the rest of the town. As Khuurava approached, the Kig-yar's yellow, reptilian eye peaked out of a slot in the top of the shop's door. "Hey, buddy!" he said cheerfully, sliding the door open a bit to let the merc inside. "Finally comin' by to check out my stock? I promise, ya won't be disappointed!"
