notice that I am presently in the RPGs fairly frequently, when other members' activity allows...

I intend to keep that up during those three weeks, aside from the registration periods for next semester. that, and the occasional outing, which typically happens way before any of you guys show up anyway. So yeah, shush :P

Been relooknig at the rules of each of the RPG's, and one thing that I've noticed is that all of them have a ban on teleportation. Now, i do realize just how cheap a smart user can be if teleportation is available, with people bringing out random crap like this:

...and using it to more or less avoid any and all hits thrown at them, but is it really so bad, that it needs to be flatout banned in all RPG's? I could see a nerfing of it working, with people making their versions of teleportation very specific and whatnot...

Teleportation is dangerous. In theory, you could teleport an entire army, or in E-wars/RPGs like SEW, teleport an entire sun into a planet and just kill everything.

There are really creative and overpowered ways to exploit teleportation. In order to neutralize them all, you'd need to restrict it so bad that it wouldn't make any logical sense. Why can I teleport a person but not a bomb half the size? There's no in-RPG reason for it.

Ah, yes... I understand. Were it not for the Anti-teleportation rules, what would prevent one of my characters in FRPG from opening up a portal to another dimension and having a freaking freight train plow into whatever they want? Overpowered, indeed...

I myself CAN think of a few logical reasons for specific kinds of neutered teleportations to exist (A teleportation device that breaks down after only one use, for example...) but yeah, teleportation is indeed one of the, if not THE most overpowered ability around... besides blowing stuff up by looknig at it funny. A device that breaks down after one use can still put an assassin in a king's bathroom, or a nuke in some random government's headquarters.

Yes, but use of said one-time device is determined by what it's used for. For example, if teleportation is only mentioned in dialogue, or done via flashback, then it's alright. Also, if said one-time use device is used to simply bring in a new character for the story that has a connection to a character that's already there (You can think of a few possibilities, can't you?), then it should be alright.

Teleportation in and of itself isn't bad, it's just how tends to be used that's the problem... Plus, banning Teleportation outright removes possibilities...

If its mentioned at all, it brings about the question of: Why can't it be used again? Better to not exist at all.

And other dimensions and the like is risky business. If we allowed everyone and their dog to do such things in, say, FRPG, then we'd have 805 different dimensions on our hands.

But teleporting across the world? Yeah...no.

If everyone and their dog began using extra-dimesnional teleportation, then that would be laziness on their part for not being creative. People tend to try to not do what others have done. If one person does extra-dimesnional teleportation that's story-related, then odds are that the other users will avoid doing that in order to preserve creativness.

The other points, however, are acceptable. ( 805 dimensions in FRPG? I can live with that... as soon as Hell freezes over and becomes an ice ring.)

Excuse me a moment.

AHAHAHAHAHAHA.

That's why there's 3 different demon-possessed dragons, all of which emerged from a stone or some similar imprisonment complete with corny stormy weather?

...Huh? I don't recall there being three demon-possessed dragons in any of the RPG's (Then again, I tend to skim over most of FRPG...)

That's called an exception, TT. The main rule, however, is that people try not to copy what others have done. Otherwise, we'd be having nothing but a sea of hydras in FRPG (Yes, there's two of them, but one's an actual hydra, and the other one's an Orochi...), and every other demon would have the same list of powers over and over again...

No, people do what they want, which is fine. There is no rule about things being similar, which is why such things like the demon dragons exist.

That doesn't mean that the first time someone makes a water dragon, any subsequent water dragons are off limits. People can and will make similar characters. Whether or not its intentional differs between instances.

The more appropriate point is that people seem to have this twisted idea that RPGs and E-wars are about power instead of, you know, interesting and fun stories. If something comes up that is overpowered and easily exploited, they will likely risk being similar to others just to get a piece of said power.

So you can't just call dibs on some overpowered concept and say that no one else can/will use it.
