Flamesight flicked her tail-tip. "Lead on, then," she mewed.
Meanwhile, another drama was unfolding on the other side of the Moonpool stream. Blazeheart and Sunstorm had run into a hostile rogue, who claimed they were on his territory even though there were no scent marks around. An argument had quickly grown into death threats on the rogue's part. Sunstorm had only been trying to keep the peace when he stepped towards the angry cat, but the rogue had taken it as a threat and attacked at once. The fight had been vicious, and almost completely one-sided. As Blazeheart had leaped to his brother's defense, he had taken a nasty blow to the head meant for Sunstorm. While he'd been lying on the ground trying to get the stars to clear, Sunstorm had been on his own and had taken heavy damage. He had a few bad wounds near his throat and on the back of his neck, as if the furious rogue had tried for a few death bites. Sunstorm's back was scored with deep claw marks, and one of his front legs was bent at an unnatural angle.
The scent of blood, coupled with the sight of his brother's wounds, was almost enough to make Blazeheart turn tail and run. Almost. But he'd stepped to Sunstorm's side and gently pushed his nose into the bloodstained fur. "Please don't die," he now whispered, crouched beside Sunstorm, almost resting in a puddle of Sunstorm's blood. "Please..." Sunstorm swallowed hard. When he spoke, his voice was hoarse, as if the words clawed at his throat. "You'll have to go on without me, brother," he murmured. "Find mother and father...and Demontalon...and tell them..." He coughed, and blood sprayed the forest floor. "Tell them...I died a warrior's death. Protecting what means...the most to me." Sunstorm breathed in deeply. Blazeheart, now with his ear pressed to the other tom's flank, heard Sunstorm's heartbeat begin to slow. Pain stabbed into his heart, more pain than he'd ever felt in his life. But he forced himself to whisper, "You'll be honored, brother. Stories will be told about your bravery." Sunstorm laughed weakly. "You really...think so...?" the dying warrior breathed. "I know so," Blazeheart mewed, his throat constricting. They fell silent, Blazeheart just listening to his brother's slowing breathing and heartbeat.
One heartbeat...two heartbeats...three....Silence. Blazeheart swallowed hard, sitting up slowly. "Sunstorm," he whispered. "I'm sorry I couldn't protect you. I'm so sorry..." He hung his head, wanting to wail his grief to the skies like a kit who had lost everything. And...in a way...he had. Sunstorm had been the only one he'd been able to find. They'd stuck together, searching for their parents. Trembling, Blazeheart leaned forward and closed Sunstorm's amber eyes with a tender lick. "You hunt with StarClan now," he whispered. "Maybe with Thunderheart and Auburnpelt, and definitely with all of the cats who have gone before." He hesitated, then added shakily, "I'll see you again one day, Sunstorm." With a heavy heart, he backed away and started looking for a good spot to bury his brother. When he found one, he started digging, allowing the memories to rise and threaten to drown him.
