The Crimson Mountains

Captain Roderick Cutter kicked out the dented door of the still burning humvee and instantly began yelling out to the survivors of Striker Company, “Regroup at the river, I repeat, regroup at the river!” He didn’t wait for a response, he loaded his Scar-L carbine and fixed his silencer, took cover behind the wrecked humvee and prepared to make a mad dash for the river. He couldn’t see anyone, and couldn’t see the attacks. He squinted at the dunes all around him, but saw nothing. He didn’t even know what happened, he had been driving down the supply route on a routine patrol with his squad, Striker group Alpha, Charlie group had been directly in front of them. Then the radio had light up with the screams of Charlie group, and moments later, the humvee had been torn to shreds by machinegun fire and RPG rounds. Then Cutter had turned sharply, the humvee had received an indirect RPG round that had flipped the vehicle over. Cutter realized that Andrews had been in the back of his humvee, directly were the RPG had hit the vehicle. He spun around the front of the vehicle to check on the specialist, they would need him, he knew how to survive out in the barren desert and endless mountains. But he didn’t make it around the front of the humvee. He felt a sharp pain in his left arm. He dropped his weapon and fell to the ground, screaming in pain.
Lieutenant Brad Feldman was tending to Specialist Andrews burns when he saw cutter go down. He instantly stood and motioned for Private Rockford to cover him as he sprinted to the captain. “Cutter!” He screamed as he dived behind chunks of Charlie’s humvee for cover.

“Cutter, respond!”

Captain Cutter heard Feldman call out his name, but when he tried to speak, blood gurgled out of his mouth. He couldn’t die like this, not here, not in this desert. He couldn’t, Striker Company needed him, and in the coming days, they would need him more than ever. With his right arm, Cutter pulled himself up using humvee’s door as a brace. He strapped his Scar-L to his back and pulled out his M9 pistol, prepared to cover Feldman as he approached.
Private Rockford was the first to see the enemy. One of them, he appeared to be a Taliban soldier, raised an AK-47 and prepared to unleash a torrent of bullets on Lieutenant Feldman.
“Feldman, get down!” screamed Rockford as he fired a burst from his Scar-H at the insurgent
The attacker spun backwards and hit the ground rolling as Rockford’s shots impacted into his chest.
Feldman crouched low next to Cutter, turned as he saw the terrorist’s head shoot out red mist, put Cutter over his shoulders and charged back across the road to where he had laid down Andrews. Andrews was gone, so was his weapon. Feldman laid Cutter down and handed him a bottle of water.

“Andrews!” Screamed out the enraged medic, “Were are you!”

Andrews had double around the dune the Insurgents had hidden behind. There was two of them left, both had RPG’s and pistols loaded. He raised his AA-12 shotgun and rolled out from behind the rock he had used as cover. One of the two terrorists spun around and faced him, an expression of shock on his face. Andrews tore a hole through him with three shots from his shotgun, right as the other insurgent fired three shots that hit Andrews shotgun, chest and helmet. He dropped his shotgun, and flew backwards as his helmet deflected the bullet, leaving him dazed.
The insurgent prepared to fire again, Andrews looked up and made a feeble attempt to roll over. Right as the terrorist’s finger prepared to pull the trigger, a massive boom echoed across the sands as a 50. Caliber bullet blew a hole into the insurgents head, and exited out the other side of his head. Andrews took a deep breath and laid down in the sand as Feldman ran up to him carrying a stretcher to Andrews with Private Rockford covering him.
Sergeant Daniel Bradford had received countless medals in his life. He had been praised by presidents of countries that average citizens didn’t even know existed. He was one of the top snipers currently stationed overseas, and had been on his way to investigate an explosion he had seen a few miles away. It just so happened that a convoy of American humvees had been ambushed. He saw they were struggling to gain control of the perimeter around the crash site, so he retrieved his Barrette 50. Cal and scanned around for any Taliban infantry. Sighting one preparing to kill a wounded soldier, Bradford quickly took wind speeds, measured relative humidity and took a risky shot at the terrorist. He breathed a sigh of relief as the insurgents head was blown to shreds, and the rifle dropped. He slung his rifle over his shoulder and began running towards the other Americans.
Cutter coughed and sat up, he was now in a field tent, his wound had been treated and he was perfectly healthy, considering he had just been shot. Private Rockford and Feldman walked into the tent, visibly shaken by recent events.
“How you holding up Cutty?” asked the rookie marine as he sat down beside the operating table.
“I’m fine Rockford, Feldman’s a good man, he’s saved our cans more than once” Muttered the tired Captain as he drifted off to sleep again.

Feldman looked at Rockford an motioned for him to exit the tent as he stood. Rockford walked out and looked up at the night sky, he had never seen so many stars in his life, and was captivated with their bright glow. The rookie visibly jumped when Bradford put his hand on his shoulder and put his finger to his lips. Once Rockford calmed down, Bradford motioned up the hill to point at an old man with a staff walking towards them. Rockford shouted for Andrews and Feldman, just as the old man collapsed and began crawling towards them.
Rockford ran towards the old man. He had been burned badly and was covered in blood from the chest down. The old man looked up at Rockford an managed to fumble out a single word. “Russiks.” Muttered the man before he laid his head down and slept into eternal slumber.

Will follow this.
Curious as to where it will go.
One thing to be wary about, try not to put one character down in making another one look good. That scene with Sgt. Daniel killing the insurgent who was about to finish off Andrews sure made Daneil seem like a bad ***, but it made Andrews look completely inept. It will be hard to make him look good later without breaking consistency somewhat

(considering that, armed with an automatic shotgun, in cover, having flanked two insurgents armed with nothing but side arms, he managed to get shot three times and only kill one of them.)
