Sharavuras stormed out of his Lord's hall. Thundarong seemed restless, as did Kildrok, The Masked Man's Fell Beast, and the other's Fell Beasts. Whatever had awoken, it was powerful..... few things could shatter the concentration of a being under the Wraith's Curse....

Arsenic nodded and, despite the impairments on his sight and hearing, felt the mental link between himself and the dragons buzz and crackle with the effort they were putting forth. They were doing their best to shield everyone, but some minds were more susceptible than others....Arsenic was, above all, concerned about Andruil and Vix. Part of his awareness was always snaking around the two of them, ready to tighten and help them fight off any mental invasion. They, however, would have to do their own part in resisting, as would the others; even he and the dragons combined couldn't protect everyone in the party entirely.

Zar's uneasiness churned faintly through the telepathic link. This was beyond his experience; but he was a dragon, an Extraxl, and he had family now. Through Aviva he was now connected to Arsenic and Vix; not as deeply, but his loyalty to his mate meant that he was bound to protect the elves. He had no such loyalty to the others...in fact the Skink's behavior and secrecy was beginning to earn his distrust. And the wyvern, his outright dislike. For now though, he would keep that to himself, buried deep beneath tight mental armor. Until such a time as his hand needed to be revealed, he would keep the cards he was dealt and the decisions he made about their companions to himself...

Aviva herself didn't like this. She pulled her upper lip back in a quiet snarl; even in this suppressed darkness their enemy had the advantage. She swooped lower, forelimbs tucked back against her chest so she didn't accidentally shave off any outlying tree limbs and shower the party with them. She could feel the topmost leaves of the trees brushing her wing tips on the downstrokes she made. Her side was aching, the cracked and bruised bones she'd earned in the fight with the wyvern protesting her extended flight, but there was nowhere to land; and in any case, if she had to, she could drop right onto anything that may attack from here.

Vix looked up at the dragon overhead; she could only just make out Aviva's silvery underbelly. The whole thing reminded her of smoke...smoke, from the slavers' fire, smothering her, stinking, choking, choking, mother, oh mother, I wish you were here... She tried to avoid hyperventilating, but her breath was coming faster and shallower. The soothing touch of Arsenic's mind wasn't enough to calm her as memories flooded her. Suddenly she was a child again, unable to help as her parents were worked to death...unable to fight back as the slavers started to abuse her too... Pain, pain, pain, darkness, oh great Goddess just let it end...no more hurting, no more hurting, nomorehurting, nomorehurtingnomorepainpainpain...

The mental link between Zar, Aviva, and Arsenic was suddenly struck with a cacophony of mental energy, filling their thoughts with unheeded images, running quickly like a sped up slideshow. The images, and the feelings and emotions connected with them, didn't seem to have any real meaning in comparison to one another, with one exception: they were all excruciatingly painful images. The stretched the mental link taut, snapping it like a over-stretched piece of string, and Discord voice hissed in all three's minds:

"Ah ah ah! This is a no-telepathy zone! Well, at least for you..."

At that point, the darkness thickened ever more, the group now wandering away from each other without the ability to see or hear their companions. Discord spoke to each of them in turn, different for each person, unheard by all the rest.

"Ah, the beautiful Vixen! Like an angel in both looks and frailty..."

"Arsenic, what's the matter? Cat got your tongue? Oh, yes, how rude of me. I had almost forgotten. An unfortunate accident that rendered you mute, am I correct?"

"Aviva, now you're certainly going to be a fun one! Go ahead and guess: is this illusion, or reality? Are you just having a terrible nightmare? I wouldn't blame you. Physical pain usually brings that about..."

"Zar, the mystery. I'd say that you were boring, but I suppose I shouldn't judge a book by its cover, eh?"

"Why the long face, Nitsunobue? Or, should I say... Anarchy..."

"Andruil, the fearless leader! Tell me, are you enjoying this job?"

"It won't be long now, Tetto my boy. Soon, the game will begin..."

"A lot less as a result of the disproportionate amount of interruptions. Tell me, is this really necessary?" responded Andruil, his tone bored and dull...

The leader of the guards slammed his trident down as a ring was formed around the mutating Zuppolandian, the guards at his sides repeating the gesture, the bladed bases of the tridents sinking into the ground almost unnaturally easily, as the tips crackled to life, arcs of what looked like electricity crackling across the weapons, as a repulsion field was formed, the pieces of the mutated man being blown back whenever it got within 10 inches of the field, each blast causing a different kind of effect to the target, sometimes engulfing the limb in flames, other times electrocuting it, some times even sparking a venomous chain reaction, rapidly destroying the body parts' very cells. Meanwhile, the once beautiful walls of the massive metropolis had shifted from the pinks, oranges, blues and cyans to a more startling blend of red, white and black...

"Damn...Even 700 years after his death, Liorick and his spawn CONTINUE to curse us!" snarled the King, streaks of red running through the patterns on his faded cyan features, the glowing tips of the two tendrils on his beard shimmering red instead of white. "What're you talking about? Who's Liorick?" questioned Septimus confusedly. "His creator. His actions damned his soul, and now they've damned us as well. Do you not see? your very ARRIVAL here is the result of his curse!" snarled the Sovereign, Septimus eyeing Desrium confusedly, not knowing what to say. "You befriended the Omen of Disaster. A True Blood Omen, Septimus. I'm sure you know what that means" said the King as he eyed the two, Septimus' eyes widening...

Discord's voice was casual and conversational as he replied. "It seems we haven't met. I'm Discord. Being of Chaos and Disharmony? Hellooooooo! If this was necessary, I wouldn't even be wasting my time. The mere fact that I'm annoying you is what makes it fun! At least for me, anyway..."

The Zuppolandian sat in the center of the field, confused and afraid. In such early stages of the mutation, its mind had not yet gone, though others like it wouldn't be as lucky. Suddenly, the mutant looked up, the sounds of his woes silenced. Its many eyes seemed to ignite, flames of the darkest night flaring around its face. A fog seemed to pour out around it, shrouding the inside of the field. "Ahhh...much better..." a low growl came from the field, the voice echoing strangely, giving it a very unnatural, synthesized sound. Without warning, the field began to split before their eyes, the mutated Zuppolandian prying it apart with its limbs, which were coated in magical energy, until it had enough space to exit. "There is power here...so much power..." the mutated being growled, breathing in sharply through its fanged maw and, as if in response, growing slightly taller as a result.

"I am no omen. I am Desrium." The armored being retorted calmly, having no clue of the massive magical disturbance that rippled across Aster. No, what he saw before him was yet another frightened soul that began to accuse him of things he had no hand in. Red streaks of light emanated from his eyes, waving and flickering like flames as he stared the Zuppolandian king's own...

"Yes yes, very amusing. From what I've heard you turned a whole city on it's head. Not sure how you see it, but after something like that, a tiny band of travellers seems somewhat...superfluous really" responded Andruil with a shrug as he walked, keeping a firm grip of Furax's reigns...

"DON'T attempt to bury the facts with lies. You are in the presence of those who know the events as they happened. You may fool your Dragon friend, but you cannot fool us" snarled a new voice, a man whose appearance seemed to emanate power entering the Throne Room, followed by an assembly of robed men, many of them carrying staves in their hands, as if ready to fight. "Denial...or ignorance. Regardless, the fact remains. Your birth was the birth of a Blood Omen. The one who created you died as a result. You ripped the very will and mind from him, and claimed the life force from his lover in order to fuel your own form, killing them both in the process. And since then, so long as you had remained on the island, catastrophe after catastrophe claimed our people, culminating in the plunge of our home into the ocean 600 years ago. After that, you had disappeared, and we believed that perhaps we had finally been freed of the curse. And yet, here you are, and with you, yet another disaster threatens my people" hissed the King. Septimus remained silent. He knew the power of Blood Omens, the magics at work and the fates of those who meddled in them. He knew he was no longer in a position to argue...

as the beast attempted to exit, three large arrow-like darts shot forward from between two of the shell structures, a horse-sized crab-like creature climbing out from between the two structures, it's hide covered in quills, a chittering hiss coming from the creature as 6 glowing orange eyes stared back hatefully at the monstrosity, two others climbing over the top of the structures, quills pointing outwards as they snapped their large crushing and slicing pincers menacingly. These were Quill-Backs; natural inhabitants of the Asterian Reefs, gathered and tamed by the Zuppolandians to act as defenders and hunters for the faction...

"What, you think I do this because I'm ambitious?" Discord asked incredulously, giving a laugh. "Like I said, it's all for fun! Sure, it's always at someone else's expense, but sacrifices must be made..."

"I mean no offense" Desrium pleaded, his dull tone making it seem as if the matter was of little importance to him. "I have awakened on the surface world without an inkling of my identity beyond my name. I was shunned and feared... I simply wished for answers... my presence here is not based in malice"

"Malice? You need not spill blood by your own blade to be an emissary of malice!" One of the elders suddenly sneered. Their silver lined blue cloak seemed to distort the light around it, blurring and bending the shape of the elder as if there was a film of water surrounding him at all times. "Your very being is a beacon for madness and destruction! Mercy turns a blind eye to those who cross your path"

At that, Desrium simply stood beside Septimus, the one that stood beside him despite the strangeness of his appearance and actions. If he could depend on anyone in the entire realm, it would be the Hueilin. Had his company brought the dragon misfortune and suffering? Did the settlements he came across become victims of this curse that followed him? He clutched the compass and looked up to Septimus, hoping that was not the case...

'Indeed,' Arsenic said, his gaze taking on a charcoal gray shade as he let his heightened awareness expand, searching out the life-sense of the others. Nothing would be able to hide it from him for long. 'Mind you, I may be mute, but I don't use my voice to kill...'

Vix, lost in the haze of memory, barely heard the voice that spoke to her. She was frozen, heart pounding, eyes slightly glazed, the thoughts no more pain no more hurting no more mom no more dad all gone everything gone last one no more all gone repeating in a jumbled mess.

Aviva and Zar hissed at the same time, the dragoness ignoring the voice and images and beginning to attempt to reconnect with Arsenic. Zar made sure to keep his mate in his sights, growling to Discord in an emotionless yet cold tone, "Indeed, you should not."

Every time Aviva, Zar, or Arsenic attempted to expand their mental powers beyond simple conversation with Discord himself, they ran straight into a barrier of pure, raw, surging chaotic energy. The effects of contact would manifest differently each time in their heads, but it was always excruciating and heavily distracting, preventing any member of the group from establishing a connection again. Prolonged contact, in an attempt to penetrate the barrier, would lead to turning the victim into a blathering idiot for a minute or so as the chaos overtook their minds temporarily.

"Well, of course not, Arsenic. That would be interesting, though, wouldn't it? Killing with your voice? Can you imagine?" Discord laughed. "I mean, who needs weapons when you can talk your enemies to death, eh?"

"Oh, be a dear and stop trying to break the rules, Aviva. It'll only make everything harder for you..."

"A dragon of few words, I see. Well, that's good. Most dragons I meet have a tendency to drone on and on..."

Discord didn't respond to Vix for the moment. He didn't much see the point. From what he could tell, she was already losing it. Barely any work on his part. Disappointing, really...

The mutant continued to breathe, completely ignoring the darts sticking out of its malformed chest, and with each inhale, it seemed to swell, drinking in the energy of the place. The air around it began to crackle with energy, the darts in its chest exploding suddenly, sending shrapnel in all directions.

'You seem to do that well enough on your own,' Arsenic replied dryly, testing the barrier carefully, never staying in contact for more than a second at a time.

"Like yourself?" Zar growled, unaware that Arsenic had said pretty much the same thing. He was concerned only with keeping Aviva in his sights, watching her movements become somewhat erratic as she flew in figure-eight patterns over the spot where she'd last seen Arsenic.

Slowly the haze of fear-filled memories cleared. Her breathing eased a bit; she could think somewhat rationally again. Slowly, she reached to the concealed sheathes on her leg and grasped two solid handles; she drew a pair of jagged daggers and lifted them to chest height, holding them sideways, one blade pointed to her left, the other to the front and right of her. She drew a deep breath, trying to calm herself, and planted her feet shoulder-width apart; these weren't the slavers she was dealing with. It was time she stopped being the fragile one, back be damned, and put the training the assassins had given her to the real test.

Trajan looked down, taking his gaze off the shadowy entity. "Unfortunately, your too late in that regard. Our Pope, Jeetis, wss killed a few days ago, and the one who was to suceed him had been found out to be the one who orchastrated his murder. She is being confined in the chambers beneath this city..."

"How... unfortunate," Zazikel replied, his shadowy form moving back and forth patiently still. "Very well then. I suppose I can wait until another Pope is elected, or however you folks do such a thing. But that is not my concern. My concern... is you. I require your assistance."

"I hope you realize that that comeback was almost disgustingly predictable," Discord said, his voice echoing simultaneously in both Arsenic and Zar's heads. Once Aviva wound up only a few feet away from her mate, she seemed to vanish from sight, the darkness overwhelming. At this point, Discord's voice changed to contact both dragons.

"Just so you know, there won't be any finding of friends from up there. More than likely, you're just going to run into a tree, and as hilarious as that would be, I'm sure neither of you would appreciate it..."

"Ah, there she is! I was worried you'd become catatonic, Vix. Good to see you're not insane just yet."

"Yoou.... you did this!......"

"SILENCE, NITSUNOBUE!"

"Insolent?" Discord scoffed. "I think you've forgotten how I let you have control of your body only minutes ago. Best show some respect, because I could just as easily let Tranquility take over. Chaos runs both ways, my friend. Of course, neither of us would want that, now would we?"

"Then your understanding of fun is clearly distorted, my dear Discord. You see, fun in the traditional sense, is the most natural drug known. The more you have, the more you want. One would think after experiencing the fun you did when causing chaos in a city, something like a small band of travellers would be barely deserving of a smirk, let alone a cackle or an extended period of amusement" responded Andruil as he continued, amused for now...

"ENOUGH" Boomed Septimus furiously, his sapphire gaze taking on a dangerous whitish-cyan shade, the rumbling growl in his throat seeming to bounce off the walls, his command still echoing through the hallways. Septimus' scaled lips curled into a snarl as the barrage of seething responses unleashed upon Desrium suddenly ceased. "Regardless of what has happened in the past, Desrium is clueless. Even if he is a Blood Omen, he knows nothing of it, or his past. It's that reason that brought us here in the first place" exclaimed the Dragon, the King eyeing the two warily. "Have you not faced trouble in Desrium's company? been struck with situations that you feared would lead to your death?" questioned the Sovereign, eerily calm in light of the heated exchange mere moments ago. "Danger is a part of life. Perhaps not for you, living your soft, safe lives in your calm, peaceful, isolated underwater utopia, but for me? With or without Desrium, I face dangers frequently. Even if the recent encounters are a result of keeping his company, they make no difference to me. Now, will you answer the questions Desrium has, or are we wasting our time here?" rumbled the Dragon, his patience for the antagonistic attitude taken by the normally peaceful people wearing thin. The King sighed, turning to face the Council. "We face the chance to end our problems with Liorick's creation once and for all. Tell them the story of Desrium's creation. Perhaps with the end of that, we can finally close the book on this story" said the Ruler, shifting his gaze to the Dragon and Desrium...

the darts, being located right in the centre of the abomination's chest, flew back almost directly at the Quill-Backs, the creatures catching most of the darts in their pincers, if not blocking them with the thick armour outright, a series of hisses coming from them. furious, one of the creatures leapt forward, landing on the ground between the guards and the rest of the Quill-backs, a massive crushing claw clamping down on it's shoulder, breaking the bones below as an open pincer jabbed into it's mutated chest, impaling the corpse repeatedly...

"Oh, I suppose you have a point," Discord grumbled. "Still, what better way to celebrate my freedom then to start off small? Call it an... experiment, if you will. Think of it this way: if you provide enough entertainment, my next game will probably be on a similar scale. If you prove to be a bore, I'll just turn the closest kingdom on itself in a massive civil war of epic proportions to make up for it!"
