"I'm sure you would," Vix replied, adding on a joking note, "But your rebellious hands wouldn't be likely to behave themselves if I did, am I right?"
Arsenic stroked his hand down the side of Aviva's neck, murmuring, 'It's time to go.' Aviva gave a nod and turned to Zar, nuzzling him affectionately. "I'll see you soon," she promised. "Safe journey." She paused, as if there were more she would like to say, but gave a tiny shake of the head. Zar took a pace back, to give her room to spread her wings. "Be careful, love," he growled. Arsenic hoisted himself onto her back, settling in his usual place, and with a forward bound and a few powerful wing beats, the black dragoness was airborne.
Zar watched her go, hearing a familiar threat ring in his ears once more. If you dare to touch what is mine, I'll rip you open and leave the rest to the birds. He had no doubt that Ren had meant every word - but his only concern was for Aviva. She was the future Matris, poised to take over the clan....but, if Ren decided that Zar's death wasn't enough....if he turned on Aviva.... The red dragon clenched his jaw.
Only once before, the future leader lost her mate before they had a child to pass their legacy on to. Extraxl mated for life - the young Matris had been so distraught that she refused to see any suitors, refused to even think of taking another mate. Luckily, the previous leaders had still been alive...and had resumed their leadership, until their daughter calmed down enough to finally accept that her partner had been killed. But what would happen...if Aviva were killed? She was Ruuva and Nex's only child. I won't let it happen, Zar thought. Ren might kill me when we meet again...but even if I die, I'll take that cold-blooded snakeheart with me. he'll never touch Aviva.
