The Covenant troops fanned out across the camp site, scanning for various energy signatures in case the enemy was cloaked. They were taking no chances, and were hellbent on getting rid of the sniper harassing them so they could get to more important business. The Arachnids would not wait for the Covenant to come find them, and the Harvester wasn't going to be deployed until the Covenant was sure they had nothing to worry about, or the enemy in question wasn't too dangerous...

The tense minutes ticked away one by one. The desert sun beared down on the desert plains. A dry breeze blew on through, sounding like the faintest whisper while doing nothing to abate the baking heat. The soldiers looking for their assailant only had the light of the baking day and a few windswept knolls to show for their efforts.

For those few, tense minutes, that is.

The sand started to rise and then slowly spill away as the blue synthetic returned topside beside the shade turret. Silently, the Seeker reappeared in a crouched stance, finding that the soldiers had spread out around him. He grabbed the Sangheli from the gunner's seat, letting it slump to the ground before taking it for himself. Adapting the control scheme in seconds, the Seeker spun the turret about, lobbing volleys of plasma into other fixed guns and unsuspecting Covenant soldiers.

The Covenant immediately scattered in alarm when the Shade opened fire, keeping away from the turret's arc of fire. The stream of plasma was deadly, but the turret rotated fairly slowly, giving the more agile Sangheili and Kig-yar time to move out of the way. Some of the slower Unggoy weren't as fortunate, quickly being blasted apart by the Shade's plasma bolts. However, the other Shade turrets also turned on the rogue emplacement, firing on it from all directions. Being stationary, Ecliptor would either have to bail out or be vaporized...

As arcs of super hot hail converged on his location, the Seeker's pulsepack unfolded from his back. With a burst of kinetic energy, the Seeker went vertical, the turret going off in a blaze of green fire below. One less resource the Covenant had to use against him. He drew his gun in flight as he flipped over end over end, drawing a bead on another gunner and firing the shot before hitting the ground in a roll and breaking off into a sprint, dodging fire from a myriad of soldiers.

The Sangheili gunner was luckier than his earlier companion, with the shot hitting his shoulder instead of his skull. Injured but alive, and howling in pain, the Sangheili was hauled out of his seat by a fellow Covenant soldier, seated against the base of the Shade so his wounds could be treated. The Covenant infantry had recovered quickly enough to turn their attention to Ecliptor, firing their handheld Covenant weapons on the speedy machine. He was a difficult target, to be sure, so most of the soldiers were relying on pure overwhelming force... or at least hoping that the damn thing would run away before the Arachnid infestation got out of hand...

Sure enough, the robot broke off into a flurry of acrobatic movements, somersaulting through the air and firing his rifle at attackers, hitting the ground and flipping off again, using himself as bait to lead the guns of his enemies. And just as sure, as the soldiers focused their fire, the Seeker aligned himself with their allies before taking to the air on his pulsepack, ensuring that on more than one occasion the Covenant troops killed each other. More than a few gunners found themselves victim to this tactic, being in their slow moving turrets.

Though the sluggish and dim-witted Unggoy commonly fell for the Seeker's trick, often gunning each other down, the rest of the Covenant soldiers were not so foolish. The Kig-yar and Sangheili were intelligent, blessed with quick reflexes and sharp senses, and had a surprising deal of restraint. They were trained soldiers, not an unorganized rabble. After the first couple times, they simply didn't fall for the trick again, and the casualties were minimal thanks to the Sangheili's personal energy shields, or the Kig-yar's point defense gauntlets. A couple grazing shots from a Storm Rifle or Plasma Pistol would not penetrate these defenses, proving only a minor annoyance while they tried to track Ecliptor's sporadic movements. They fired in short, concentrated bursts, and the Shade gunners used their handheld weapons instead of the slowly-rotating turrets (which had an incredibly difficult time leading a target this fast), aiming at where the Seeker would be...

After exhausting the effectiveness of his misdirection and anticipating the enemy adapting to it, Ecliptor integrated his pulsepack into the mix, using its bursts to throw himself in another direction all together while still in the air, causing many leading shots to screech on past him, leaving contrails of rippling air as they soared off into the far hills and blue yonder.

He stowed his rifle away while twisting and leaping around the battlefield and picked up two discarded plasma pistols in the process, the guns taken from troops already slain. He hit the ground in a sidelong crouch and slid, plasma fire going off all around him. His hands glowed brightly for an instant before he threw the pistols at nearby attackers, the overloaded weapons exploding like grenades, showering the surrounding area with slag.

Covenant soldiers scattered, instinctively knowing of the volatile nature of their own weapons. Two bright bursts of green plasma appeared when the pistols overloaded, catching a single unfortunate Unggoy soldier in the blast. Several Sangheili tossed Plasma Grenades as they dove, trying to either stick the momentarily still Seeker, or at least land the explosives near it. In the midst of all that, the remaining Covenant soldiers, at a safe distance from the explosions, continued to fire their weapons in short, controlled bursts.

The Banshee squadron that had been circling the destroyed scout machine arrived on the scene, providing their own firepower whenever Ecliptor moved away from the infantry below. A well-aimed Fuel Rod blast could send Ecliptor flying just from the concussive force of the attack.

Ecliptor raised his hands, energy collecting in his palms and rippling outwards, evident of some kind of displacement field. The grenades lobbed at him were all caught inside, floating freely around the Seeker's hands. When that happened, the speedy robot broke off into a sprint, weaving through plasma fire until he was upon the Sangheli, at which point he returned their explosives with a kinetic blast and ran off to deal with the next issue.

The Sangheili Ecliptor targeted, a Commander and Storm soldier, immediately moved to get away from the returned grenades. The lower-ranking Elite was unfortunate in that one of the grenades stuck to his leg as he dove out of the way, while the Commander managed to scramble away as his compatriot was vaporized in the bright blue explosion of searing heat and plasma. The Sangheili got to his feet and opened fire with the rest of his Covenant companions as Ecliptor retreated again.

Unfortunately for the Seeker, he moved right into the path of a Banshee, which lobbed a rush Fuel Rod blast before arcing back up into the sky. The green bolt was not a direct hit, but slammed into the ground in front of Ecliptor. The concussive wave of the explosion sent the synthetic flying, and the heat from the fuel rod would probably damage some of the Seeker's mechanical components in the process...

Fortunately -or unfortunately, depending on how one were to look at it- the Seeker's light frame was swept off from the ground by the initial pressure wave before the convection off of the blast could take its toll. He was blown back as the rod came down and the explosion tossed him upwards with a spray of sand. He was able to right himself with kinetic pulses from his hands and pulsepack before he returned to the ground, landing in a crouch and finding himself under heavy fire, several plasma rounds exploding against his metal body.

Several Kig-yar had tracked Ecliptor's tumble through the air, overcharging their Plasma Pistols as they did so. When the Seeker righted himself, they fired alongside their comrades. The green bolts of overcharged plasma were slower than the lighter shots fired by their fellow Covenant, but they were helped along by a minor tracking capability and the fact that each blast carried an EMP effect that could stall the engine of a Wraith tank for several seconds...

Sand was blasted into the air with an urgent discharge of energy, the dust billowing around the Seeker and obscuring him from view for a split-second. In that time, quicker than the blink of an eye, the robot had disappeared, a small crater in the ground marking where he once was. And even that last reminder of his presence was transient, as the surrounding sand started to fill in the depression, along with the sand in the air settling back down.

Whether or not the robot had truly made his retreat had yet to be seen.

Several overeager Grunts gathered near the crater, jabbering quietly to each other as they waved their pistols cautiously at where the Seeker had once been. The rest of the Covenant wisely stayed back, a couple of Sangheili barking angry orders at the Unggoy, who quickly scuttled away from the crater. A gold-armored Sangheili Warrior began getting everyone back to work: getting rid of the dead for proper burials, tending to the wounded, and patrolling the area for any signs of Ecliptor. Until they were absolutely sure the synthetic was gone for good, they wouldn't let their guard down again...

For a time, things at the surface seemed to have settled. No one lost their heads, literally and otherwise. No one found themselves exploding in a violent shower of plasma. It really did appear that the Seeker had made his retreat. And he was doing just that, surprisingly enough -though to gain another angle of attack.

He did not know the full extent of his actions, however. Disturbances in the sand did not go unnoticed.

Would not go unnoticed indeed. The Covenant had brought their equivalent of the seismograph with them, to track any signs of underground Arachnid activity. They would be useful to find the burrowing Seeker as well, but while the Covenant busied themselves with setting those up, another threat had also picked up on Ecliptor's activities, and did not appreciate the intrusion.

Something else was tracking Ecliptor's movements, from deeper underground, moving to intercept the synthetic by following the telltale sounds of his digging....

His "digging" in this case: alternating kinetic pulses. The result: causing the sand to shift from the bottom layers up, causing instability at the surface. Weakening the sediment for his coming attack would give him ample opportunities to seize an advantage, but he too detected that he was not alone underground. Something was approaching his location. He decided its presence would be of more use elsewhere, so decided to sift through the sands, literally swimming upwards through the ground.

The presence continued to follow Ecliptor, as predicted, moving up towards the surface after the Seeker in a straightforward direction. It wasn't trying to be subtle, and was moving as quickly as possible to get to its quarry. If it was aware of the Covenant on the surface, it paid them no heed in its single-minded pursuit.

At topside, the sand began to stir, slowly at first, but quickly escalating until grains started to jump from the ground like small geyser streams. Only seconds later, the Seeker burst forth from the sand, screeching into the air upon his pulsepack, sand raining down from his abrupt ascent that threw him well over ten feet into the air.
