Steeltalon looked up, surprised when Darkness screeched and jumped up. She'd been on the verge of sleep. Silver was still eating the fish, looking full and sleepy. Steeltalon yawned and glanced at the wounds on her sides, pleased to see they were healing nicely. She could guess what had woken Darkness up. She sighed and laid her head back down, her eyes slowly closing.
Steeltalon was back in her old territory. But this time, she was alone and watching her younger self struggling across a barren wasteland. Another raptor aproached the younger Steeltalon, who responded with a lunge that snapped the raptor's neck. The present Steeltalon winced, remembering how she had felt while doing that. No emotion at all had been in her mind. The younger Steeltalon ran off, an insane look on her face. That was the beginning of Steeltalon's killing spree. The present Steeltalon followed, keeping close behind as a young rex fell to the younger Steeltalon's claws. When the younger Steeltalon attacked a spino and got claw marks down her sides, the present Steeltalon growled. She had scars, exactly where the spino had clawed her.
Silver heard Steeltalon growl in her sleep. The hatchling looked at Steeltalon in sympathy. "Another nightmare," she guessed quietly.
The present Steeltalon followed the younger Steeltalon as she ran from the Spino, killing raptors, rexes and spinos along the way. The furious spino followed her trail, sometimes letting out roars of frustration when Steeltalon ran through the trees. The present Steeltalon found herself racing alongside her younger self, her heart racing just as it had done when she was really running from the spino. The spino roared again as the younger Steeltalon jumped to the ground and slid out of sight. The present Steeltalon gasped and followed, remembering the underground caves. The younger Steeltalon's eyes were huge with pain, fear and suffering. She settled down to lick her injuries as Steeltalon's vision faded.
It was Steeltalon's turn to wake up with a jolt, as she usually did after nightmares. She breathed out heavily when she raised herself into a crouch, her eyes wide and staring. "No, anything but that," she hissed angrily. "**** it . . . " Silver huddled close to Steeltalon, eyes wide. The older female knew she would never be able to sleep until the end of the day. She stood and walked to the stream, settling down and staring at her reflection. For a split second, she saw her younger self, covered in her enemies' blood and grinning psycotically. Then she saw her present self, covered in wounds and eyes full of pain. I'm no different than I was before, she realized, closing her eyes.
