'The slavers cut her, with a hot blade,' Arsenic said, pushing her shirt up enough to reveal her back. A long, thick red scar slashed across her spine, heading for her hip, and many other smaller scars marked her back as well, revealing the aftermath but not the extent of what she'd been through. 'Her parents weren't cooperating...so they showed them a taste of what they could do to Vix.' Vix closed her eyes, and Arsenic felt a single tear touch his thumb. He wiped it away gently.

Arsenic smiled thinly. 'Those are the kind of people we've been working to eliminate.' He ran the fingers of his free hand over the scar which still felt hot. The fit wasn't over yet. 'But this was only the beginning. Those men beat and worked her parents to death...and used her mother as their...plaything.' His lip curled in disgust. 'And when Vix was old enough...they did the same to her.' He touched one of the smaller scars. 'These are whip marks.'

She muttered something under her breath, paused, and looked up at them both. "But my family would still be dead," she murmured. "Killing won't bring them back." A bitter smile flickered over her lips. "The Adsila name...my bloodline...dies with a cripple." The red-haired man froze, staring at her with wide eyes. Adsila. 'You never told me you were descended from the Adsilas...' "I...couldn't." She looked away. "I'm not worthy of the name."
