Duke Mortar stroked his chin thoughtfully, watching the demonstration from beneath the hood of his cloak. The wooden contraption glided across the surface of the specially prepared pond with an almost gracefulness. It was like a stilt walker with the top cut off, and instead of pushing off the ground, it's legs had large flat paddles at their ends. A team of engineers had come up with the designs after spending weeks studying various aquatic animals, and so far Duke Mortar was impressed.

"We believe the design could be scaled up easily." Begun one of the engineers
"This 'boat' can manoeuvre with just 4 Badai on board. In a design large enough to hold trolls, we believe we could effectively tackle the open ocean."

The duke was silent for a while, watching the badai on board the small boat pulling laboriously on their oars. He has concerns about it's stability. It seemed to rock back and forth a lot, even in the calm pool, but the engineers seemed to believe it was viable, and it was certainly the most viable craft he'd seen. He gave the nod to his aides.

Tzeentch had settled down in the center of a quiet room some distance into the temple. Their progress was at a stand still. Preparations for the attack could not be made until all forces had arrived. Thus, it was the calm before the storm. With nothing else to do for the time being, the shapeshifter was content to meditate in peace. She had been traveling nonstop for days in her efforts to warn the continent of the coming darkness, but now, finally, she had time to rest. As an elemental, she did not need sleep, but meditation aided in the recovery of energy, something she needed quite urgently...

Desrium gave the wooden sword no second glance, despite the strangeness of such a thing. It did not concern him, for its form was that of a sword, its weight was distributed in the manner of a metal blade and it felt firm in his grasp. By that criteria, he had no qualms with what material it was made of and deemed it a respectable weapon for his comrade.

He backed up several feet so that the shapeshifter was out of his range and spaced his feet apart, one in front of the other. First, he showed Septimus one-handed maneuvers, holding the blade so that it pointed almost horizontal as he made a slashing movement, the sword arcing quickly to the right. The wooden sword audibly swiped through the air and with a swift twist of the arm, Desrium swung to the left, using the momentum to spin on the heel of his leading foot while simultaneously flipping the hilt of the sword in his hand, locking it in the reverse position by time he stopped moving and jabbing the brown blade backwards. If there had been an enemy behind Desrium, it would have been ran through right then and there. He used a similar technique before when he was attacked by Nethrezim.

Rattlebones started to descend slowly, carrying his succubus master on his back. Icil thought this village looked pretty welcoming, and it looked quite cozy as well...

Sulrana's black eyes glittered mischievously as she lowered herself into a low crouch and very softly began to stalk around the corner, moving with all the soft-footed stealth of her leopard half until she was barely five feet behind the hippogriff, who towered over her from her low vantage. There she paused momentarily, tail tip twitching, hind leg muscles bunching as the gryphon took in a breath and launched herself up in a high leap, letting out a honking, two-toned screech. Her forefeet landed briefly but squarely on Thalion's flank and hindquarter, Sulrana landing with most of her weight on her hind legs, but just enough up front to cause a startling blow before she leaped off to the side...

The streets were relatively silent, save for a few people wandering about. The interior of the Inn was aglow with light, as a soft, warm voice could be heard from within, presumably telling a story of some sort. No one seemed to notice Icil yet, nor did they notice Rattlebones... though this was probably due to the rather emptiness of the exterior portion of the toewn rather than ignorance on their part...

Flaming Dogs, Nightshade barracks roost

Midnight perched relaxed in the common room, idly listening to the conversations of the other warriors. "Then I swooped down and scored my raptor claw down his back" There were impressed coos from the crowd. "Then, the f**ker reaches around and grabs hold of my thigh just here, my claw still lodged in his hip" The excited harpy gestured to where the troll had apparently held her, the rest of the harpies drawing in their breath. "At first I thought it was just a last ditch attempt before he fell, when suddenly the crazed beast releases the most horrible laugh you've ever heard, deep and insane. Then he unleashed his elbow into my shoulder like a bolt from a ballistae."
The story teller waited, examining the expressions of her listeners. Midnight sat quietly, smirking to herself. The harpy went on "The force of the blow knocked me round, so that I was clinging to his back. I thought I was done for, all it would have taken for him to snap me in half was to yank my leg around in front of him, but my claw was still snagged in his hip. I knew I couldn't die yet, not there, not to some troll smelling like a cesspit, so I pulled my knife free and then unhooked the raptor claw, the only thing keeping me safely away from his other arm..." She waited one last time to let the suspense sink in, and then delivered the final act "It was me or him. He went to yank me around, still laughing, ready to rip me apart, but I stabbed my knife into his throat. Furious, he pulled me off his back, causing the knife to cut all the way around his throat, ripping open the arteries in his neck. Blood spilled out, and with a final gutteral scream, the beast toppled around off balance, I barely managing to leap out from underneath his mass."

The listening harpies cheered. Midnight merely sat there smirking to herself. She already knew that story, she had been there, and she knew it had been nothing like that. The story teller, Moonswipe, had indeed dived down onto the troll's back, scoring a vicious strike with her raptor claw, much to the troll's amusement, but she didn't valiantly slay it with a knife, she panicked and lost her footing. She would have been crushed into a ball had Blackwind not swooped in and sent an arrow through the troll's eye. Midnight's expression fell. Blackwind took an arrow to the shoulder herself soon after, but there was no swooping guardian angel, instead, she fell into the hands of a troll rider, whose mount wasted no time in pouncing upon the downed harpy, ripping her limb from limb.

Moonswipe was about to launch into another tale of glory, just beginning to set the scene, when Blacktalon appeared at the window, everyone knew what she was about to say, just by her expression. "Another harpy."

They gathered out on the top of the roost, watching the procession through the streets of flaming dogs. Several armed Bada warriors with a troll pulling an open wagon, collecting the latest victims of the plague ravishing the land. Normally, a handful of Badai would succumb each day, but occasionally a harpy would fall to madness as well. She was barely large enough for the wagon, her faded wings draped over it's edges. It was a stark reminder that everybody living in the city had magic in their blood, magic which needed to be controlled.

"Very funny," Tetto'eko replied with a smirk. "Regardless of your questionable sense of humor, I still wish to accompany you." He looked up at the darkness in the sky, face grim once more. "It is... important to me to go."

Rattlebones landed somewhere on the exterior of the village. Icil climbed off of the skeletal wyvern's back, telling him to stay put like she did at the temple. The succubus walked into the village, hoping that she wouldn't be feared from at the very least. She walked down the pebbled dirt path, her wings folding behind her back like a dying leaf on a late October day...

"You're making it sound like we told you off like a child. Nobody ever said you couldn't go" responded Andruil, his gaze snapping to the source of the screech, catching sight of Sulrana, eyes wide and batting at Thalion, catching sight of it just as the large Hippogriff reacted...

And react he did, the Shire Horse-sized winged beast bucking violently, barely missing Sulrana as a piercing screech rang out, catching the attention of everyone in the immediate vicinity, his focus on the Griffin Hawk above broken, Shiryaz looking rather pleased with himself, feathers puffed and the hawk's eyes half closed in what could almost be amusement, if not for the stony expression the hawk's face was frozen in...

Septimus watched Desrium's demonstration intently, focused entirely on the movements and reading what simply seeing couldn't tell him, in his positioning, taking note of the focus with which the Blood Omen moved, and the precision with which he executed the manoeuvre. And once it was over, the Dragon-turned Dark Elf reviewed the entire action in his mind, his perfect memory allowing him to relive the moment with crystal clear focus...

Guame looked up at Discord. "Who knows... Perhaps the solution will be given to us in due time..." He responded, noticing the Valenhad dragons flying overhead, while the old beastman tried to ignore Discord tocking his nose. Germania's own forces weren't too large, unfortunately. Due to the demon attack and Smaug's arrival, many good soldiers were either dead or injured and back at Tristan. Add to that with 1/5th of Germania's forces guarding Tristan, the forces of Germania massed here were around 700, adding in the dragons. It was a far cry from Valenhad's forces, but then, the army size had been criplled in years past due to many of the bishops and the archbishop urging Jeetis to size down the army, agaisnt the former emperor's wishes...

Above the meeting place, was the veyr same shrike that had been watching the incident at Gorgoroth. The bird was perched on a twig, eating a small lizard it was impaled, while overgoing the information it had heard...

Down by the shores of Lake Aaken, Byakuren and Dione were walking along the beach. Now they noticed the skeletons along the lakeside. It was an eerie, almost unatural sight, one that made both the pope and the monk feel uneasy...

Icil soon caught the attention of a guard, who quickly ran up to her before shouting in VERY loud voice.

"Nay," the guard replied. "I was just curious, young Icil. Take care of yourself."

The guard soon went back to his post like nothing happened. The voice in the Inn seemed to grow a bit louder now...

Septimus reached forward, gripping the sword by the hilt, taking it from the armoured being's hands as he felt a surge of energy run through his left hand and up his arm, surprising him somewhat, before sinking into a defensive position that felt natural, not realising it was actually a notably effective one where sword styles were concerned, the blade held to his side, at an angle, edge facing towards Desrium as Septimus backed away, giving himself some space. With a sigh, he began applying what Desrium had taught him, adjusting it subconsciously as he went along, adjusting his stance so that he had a more stable footing, putting in his mind the scenario of being rammed or shield-bashed by an opponent, ensuring he would not fall over uselessly in such a scenario. He moved the leading foot forward somewhat, giving him maximum reach with his blade, before swinging upwards diagonally, twisting the blade as he brought it down, giving a horizontal slash, mirroring Desrium's spin almost perfectly as he flipped the blade, edge upwards, before driving it back behind him as he went down on one knee, the movement intended to evade a horizontal swing coming from the theoretical opponent he would have impaled with the strike. As he ceased, he rose up to his feet, looking down at himself and then at the blade. That felt oddly natural for his first attempt at wielding a blade. Sure, his analytical abilities gained through his perfect memory were an advantage, but even when learning other things, he had not picked them up with the same....instinctive...yes, that was the word to describe this. it was an instinctive behaviour. Perhaps this blade was more than just a magical relic. Looking up at Desrium, he decided to take the opinion of one far more experienced. "How was that?" he asked, interested to hear what the Blood Omen would say...

Andruil nodded, understanding and agreeing entirely. Unlike the situation with Elias, Andruil was not doubtful of the skink's ability to defend himself. As much as he enjoyed teasing him, Andruil knew Tetto had actual ability hidden behind his seemingly brittle frame. His magic had saved himself, along with Vix and Arsenic, on multiple occasions during their time in the forest. He would be a valuable comrade in the coming battle, regardless of his age...

"More than I have taught you" Desrium replied. He hadn't brought up evasive tactics and yet the Scholar integrated them into the maneuver seamlessly. The armored being nodded approvingly. "Teaching you will not be a difficult task"

Septimus nodded, inwardly smiling at the comment, before flipping the blade so the hilt pointed towards Desrium. "What's next?" he asked, eager to learn...

"The basic formation for a two handed technique" Desrium said as he took the sword and turned it upright, both gauntlets locked on the hilt like vices. He stepped back from Septimus and parted his feet to side with his leading foot only slightly ahead of the other. With that, the armored being threw his arms about into a powerful sidelong swing that, while slower than the one handed slash, packed bone shattering power behind it, so much so that it did not matter if the blade pierced its target. The impact on bare flesh would be a crippling blow. Twisting around with the motion, Desrium transitioned into a forward jab, followed by an upwards slash split seconds later and with a speedy flip of the hilt, finished with a reverse stab, bending his knees as he drove the blade downwards, stopping when the blade was held two feet off the ground at an angle.

Desrium then stood up, the space between his feet equal to that when he started, the positioning the same. Using both hands to drive a sword meant channeling one's bodily force behind each attack. To ensure that what gave each slash its power did not become the wielder's downfall in a battle, a constant formation had to be maintained. From that, not only could the wielder mount any strike, but react to and evade those of his enemy without losing their balance and toppling to the ground.

As he went to hand the blade to Septimus, Desrium noticed the similarity in the principle. Perhaps his skills with a sword could translate somewhat to the spear?
