Firestreak continued on, desperate to get to the ThunderClan camp. He glanced around, suddenly seeing the form of a cat. Firestreak bounded toward it, hoping it was a patrol. As he neared, he saw that it wasn't a patrol. It was Shadowstar. Firestreak's eyes widened, finally coming to the ThunderClan leader's side. Shadowstar! ....Are you alright? he meowed, noticing Shadowstar's stuggle to walk, the gray tom supporting her with his shoulder.

"Adder bit me," Shadowstar hissed through clenched teeth, trying to ignore the injury while fighting back a yowl of agony.

Firestreak's expersion darkened, the gray tom looking away. We need to get you back to the camp... he mewed, helping her walk as they neared the camp, the gray tom's expresion still sorrowful, not knowing what was to become of Shadowstar...

Snowclaw ran out of the den after hearing a yowl. He padded to Hawksight and mewed. "What was that?"

Spottednose playfully swatted Streamflower's ear, mewing, "Come on, lazy paws, get up!"

Shadowstar limped beside Firestreak until they reached the camp. Once there, she laid down and curled up, feeling herself grow steadily weaker. Eventually, she stopped breathing, losing a life.

Hawksight blinked and meowed, "What was what?"

Streamflower groaned. "I don't wanna," she mewed, like a kit who's determined on sleeping until sunhigh.

Firesteak watched Shadowstar for a few seconds, sorrow clouding his gaze. He yowled, wanting to alert the clan medicine cat, not knowing if she could be saved. Firestreak sighed shakily, still watching, concerned for the ThunderClan leader...

Snowclaw heard the sorrowful yowl. He mewed to himself. "Why does this always happen in my pressence?" He lowered his head. "5 lives and counting.." He mewed

Stormtail raced out of his den and skidded to a halt beside Shadowstar. "Is she dead?" an apprentice whispered, trembling. Several more of the Clan had gathered, murmuring quietly to one another. When Shadowstar stirred again, she still felt weak. Her eyes flickered open for a moment, then shut again as her breathing began to slow again.

Spottednose heard the yowl and poked his head out of the nursery. He saw a large group of cats gathered around something, so he decided to investigate. When he sw Shadowstar he yowled, "What in the name of StarClan is going on?!"

Firestreak remained silent, watching Shadowstar. The memories of being in the clan flashed in his mind, the gray tom sighing quietly to himself. The message from StarClan repeated in his mind, but he continued to watch silently, sorrow still clouding his gaze...

Finally, Shadowstar lost her last life. She looked as though she was merely sleeping. Stormtail bowed his head and meowed, "Spottednose...you must take up the position as leader. Shadowstar is dead." Shocked yowls came from the Clan. "Shadowstar dead! No! Never!"

Streamflower's jaws parted in a wordless yowl of disbelief. "It can't be!" a young tom cried. "Shadowstar was only a young cat--she had her whole life ahead of her!" One of the Clan was rigid with shock. Hawksight. She didn't speak, her eyes closed as she fought back a mournful howl.

Spottednose bowed his head to touch his nose to Shadowstar's body. He stood straight again, yet his tail drooped as he backed away to let other cats do the same.

Streamflower padded forward, barely concious of what she was doing, and touched her nose to Shadowstar's head. "Goodbye...ThunderClan will never forget you," she whispered. Instead of backing away, she sat where she stood, staring up at the sky. StarClan, how could you be so cruel? she wondered, scanning the blue abyss with emerald eyes full of sorrow and desperation. Why did you take Shadowstar from us?

Hawksight eventually let out a long sigh and meowed, "Goodbye Shadowstar...thank you for accepting me into ThunderClan, and the Clan thanks you for all of the encouragement you gave them when times were hard. Even when all hope seemed lost, you found a way to lead the Clan on. We thank you," she repeated sorrowfully. Several sad meows of agreement came from the Clan.

Spottednose looked at Hawksight when she said her speech, but then turned and padded into the nursery sadly.

Snowclaw made a mew. "She is with Loneclaw now..." He made a weak smirk, "A fate worse than death...." He tried to joke, but he fell onto his stomach, his eyes too weak to stay open.
