The smell of fresh water was getting stronger, and the pale tiger-striped raptor knew she was closing in. Her noisy stumble had made her even more edgy - now the raucous squawking of an unfamiliar bird made her jump. Easy, Rose...just a bird. A noisy bird, but still just a feathered, winged annoyance, she tried to reassure herself. The dirt was getting a bit damper underfoot, making her feel optimistic...until she felt a sudden dip in front of her, and a cool breeze that smelled fresher than any she'd scented in a while reached her. It seemed she'd found what she'd been looking for. But she soon found, by taking a small, tentative step forward, that the bank was steep and slippery. Rose paced back and forth, frustrated. The water she needed was there, almost close enough to touch, but she couldn't get to it; one misstep on that bank would send her sliding into the water, where crocodiles might lie in wait. If only she could see! There might be a way down right under her nose, but like this she'd never find it before she made a fatal mistake.
