plasma cutters do a good job in that regard. sure, they're not beams, but the reason they function at all is the heat. that's what makes them cut. you can't really argue against the fact that plasma is primarily driven by thermal energy. not without overhauling the entire concept of plasma itself.
just saying 'it's fiction' doesn't work. if that were the case, I could have Horus absorb super cold temperatures as well on grounds it's temperature-related and go 'it's fiction. temperature = energy option. can be drained', even though the fact of the matter is the exact opposite.
a thermonuclear explosion's shockwave is generated, IIRC, by an instant, intense increase in temperature. but the driving force that causes it is the radiation [I am very weak regarding my knowledge on this subject, and am not equipped to look into it properly. I'm just addressing it at a glance for the sake of our discussion]. therefore, it makes sense to call it nuclear energy, despite the blast being heat-related.
additionally, Horus siphons heat from his surroundings using any source he can find. plasma serves as a source. as do fires, the sun, and so on. the reason he spends a large amount of time in the upper atmosphere is to gain the most of the sun's energy, rather than getting a small portion of it lower in the atmosphere.
as for Rook, they are the same character, though personalities differ drastically this time around. in ISS1 he was just a generic enemy to haunt Crusher and those close to him. this time around he's an actual, legitimate character. i've adjusted his behaviour to make him a viable character option.
"Ah yes, organised chaos. the sign of a clever but ever-busy mind. To the perpetrator, a carefully woven web of belongings and intrigue, but to the bystander? Madness!"
